Korg Arp 2600M

I have some bad news about expensive things.

You really need sales volume and a focus on quality for everything to be prefect out of the box. Apple and Toyota can pull it off, but few others even try.

The analogy I like to give to engineering teams is that the relationship between quality and volume is like a balloon with an intricate design. If you inflate the balloon, then small details become visible. If you add more air (volume) then things that you couldn’t see previously become obvious, but also new previously unknown problems are still lurking in the background.

This is why warranties and warranty service are so critical. I bought my 2600m from Sweetwater because they made replacing a bad K2 totally painless, and that was a $200 synth. I’ve been tempted to get an Iridium from Thomann (much cheaper than US prices), but Murphy’s Law guarantees that I’ll get a bad unit and be hit with import duties multiple times. :sob:

eh… not like I’ve never heard of issues with any of those companies… for Elektron: crooked screens (or with hairs inside them!), screws rattling around inside the unit, DT buttons sticking, Models buttons sticking, etc… and then there’s all the Moog Grandmother reverb tanks that broke off… or Mother/DFAM/SubH knobs that were crooked… and there’s a thread over on MW right now about Sequential basically giving a guy the finger over his couple-year-old Prophet 5’s mod wheel going south.

even with quality parts, not everything is always perfect. shit happens with every manufacturer. it’s when it seems to be commonplace that you worry. and I personally don’t have that feeling for Korg. I’ve barely heard of any issues with the 2600/2600m, let alone systemic ones (e.g. the Teenage Engineering fadergate issue going on right now…).

did Korg get you sorted on this? likely they just need to send you a new nut to snap on there. maybe it broke in shipment…?

My first Virus TI2 had to be sent back. Fortunately, Kemper sent me a shipping label to their depot in Colorado (IIRC) and overnighted me a new Virus from Germany. That level of service (in addition to the generally good sound and comprehensiveness as a VA poly) probably goes a long way to explaining why Viruses remained popular for so long after the TI software was abandoned. I would prefer to tour with a Virus over just about any other synth.

All companies have issues. Its inevitable. The sign of a good company is not one without issues but one that resolves them well.

we all know this… however… they made the FS with proper jack nuts. the M was more or less made of the same ilk as high quality MIJ premium line.

I admit I’ve only used the built-in speakers on the 2600M. I’ll try running it into external speakers to see if oscillators are still audible with the sliders already down.

On the Prophet 5/10 thread there’s someone who got a brand new Prophet 10 - high end product from Sequential - and was disappointed to hear something rattling inside. I don’t think this means Sequential is a terrible company or the Prophet 10 is a worthless piece of trash nobody should buy. I think it just means we can’t expect everything to be perfect all the time.

2600M is the right size for me. No regrets on my failed attempt to order a full size 2600 a while back - nice machine by all reports but when I ask myself if really needed it the answer is always no. Need != want.

My B2600 new friend just arrived! Looking forward to unbox this! It’s a little annoying that Korg didn’t shipped the original box in a box though.

Korg also shipped my new VOX guitar in the bare product box and of course it arrived with holes punched in the hard case. Super weak sauce. I couldn’t believe my eyes when it showed up, instruments should always be double boxed. I think the folks in that NY warehouse are just shipping out the discounted gear with much less care than they should. Shame on them.

I must say that it looks amazing and no rattling nuts on mine. The wait is finally over :grinning:

I had the same problem when I got my MS-20M; except I bought it second-hand and it was still sent like that !

Enjoy the 2600.

nice! I am dreaming of a full size ARP 2600 and Minimoog and P10 next year. Will sell my Moog Sub 37 and DFAM and few other synths to fund these three.

Will Korg re-release the FS next year?

hope so! I did not have budget this year for new synths.

I would be pretty amazed if they did. first batch sold out in hours. three years later, the second batch took a few days to sell out. they can be had for close to their original price second-hand now (sometimes less than it). and 2600m’s are like 40% off at retail… doesn’t exactly scream “we should make more!” to me. more like “we’ve satisfied demand.” and I would think they really don’t want to sit on back-stock of FS’s (because they’re huge). but we’ll see… if anything, maybe in a few more years…?

That’s because Sweetwater doesn’t suck.

The claim that this M model will be discontinued seems to be true. Thomann has sold out and the product page is gone. The reseller that sold it to me for some days ago has also taken the product page down, and just a few resellers still have it in stock in Sweden.

Keep in mind, that KORG has done the same thing in preparation for a redesign. Hard to be sure which direction they could head. They are pretty nimble, and so i wouldn’t think another model is impossible. They also stick by product categories too, which says a new version of a 2600 is possible.

Yeah, who knows, I feel like it was the perfect time to grab this now. The pricing was at its lowest on black Friday since its release. I wouldn’t dare to not grab it in hopes for a new model.

Maybe they will go for a real nut model next time

I think that is wise.

I too was imagining a new model, and real nuts crossed my mind, as well as a"kit" version, or one in RED, or who knows …
