Koala Sampler App

I just found sampling my acoustic guitar and uke via Koala using iPhone mic is decent quality and super easy. Then record that via USB to the SP! So easy!

You could also use Koala as a microphone direct into the SP right? I mean, once you record your voice into Koala, you can essentially just play it back into the SP

This I haven’t tried yet, hoping you can though!

It’s just nice when I’m out back or in the garage jamming out, I always have my phone so it just works!

It seems like its impossible without using M4L or VSTs!

Anyone else feel like thats crazy?!!?

Basic fricking functionality missing right there!

Do you mean using the 404 with Ableton as a midi/audio interface and sampling to the 404’s pads instantly?

@Laser Impossible even with M4L and plugins! I haven’t found anything yet.

No, I mean sampling into Push 2 like you sample into Koala. Ideally you could hold down a pad in a drum rack to record to that pad.

I’ve found a couple which seemed like they might have worked, but didnt work yet on M1. I’ll have a look and see if I can remember the names etc.

VSTs samplers which can record directly are infuriatingly rare.

One I’ve found is Crossfade Loop Synth by Expert Sleepers. I’ve set it up so I can sequence playback, record, and clear buffer trigs, all from different notes on my Hapax, very similar to the Octatrack.

It took a lot of setting up though, pissing around with MIDI conversion etc to make it work correctly.

Theres a ton of basic stuff missing from Ableton… eg, you cant MIDI map the solo buttons on a drum rack (!!!), that took a LOT of time in Drambo to fix and make solo buttons which sent out signals to the mute buttons instead (and remember all their states etc).

Maybe Koala will work on Mac soon? Would be helpful!

There’s a Mac version already available, but it doesn’t have an AU.

Ah yes, thats right. I need plugins to incorporate. Standalones pretty pointless for me!

Kind of like that new app, 2020 by DubRussell. Looks insane, standalone only tho. Boo!

Anyone ?

Koala renames the sample files to numbered wav files - you can open the .koala project file with a zip utility like 7zip, then browse to the ‘sampler’ folder, you’ll see all the audio files of the project in there, there is also a sampler.json file inside the sampler folder, if you open that in an editor like VSCode, you can see all the parameters than make up the samples settings, there is also a samples array with the id of each sample, and the filename, but in my experience, the filename value is always empty.

I see what you’re saying, but I was hoping to figure out the name of the file that was originally loaded to the pad. That’s something different isn’t it ?

I think its supposed to store it in the filename value, but none of my saved projects have ever done that, and I don’t see a reference to the original filename anywhere else in the project. Might still be worth taking a look inside the project you’re trying to find the filenames for though, to see if yours is any different?

Nice one, fun little app !!! Thanks for the tip!

Over in a thread on the Teenage Engineering TP-7, I found out that at least two Elektronauts (me and @topo_explo) use Koala for field recording.

I keep Koala in the dock of my iPhone so I can launch it quickly, and then just grab a sound using the iPhone’s mic, which is good enough for most up-close recordings.

One thing that makes koala such an excellent sample/field recording capture hub is its extensive export feature. The only thing that’s missing for me is the ability to export a batch of samples as a sample chain file. I use another app to remedy this but it has a few issues: it doesn’t allow for direct import from koala and I have to load each sample individually. Does anyone know of an app that creates sample chains and also has these specific features?

There’s been quite a few updates since I last used Koala. What’s the best export approach if you want to quickly move the project from iPhone to iPad?

I remember getting something working but it felt fiddly

I’ve never used this function, so I don’t know whether or not it’s fiddly, but you can export an entire project (export song) to another device.

I’ll check it out, not sure if that’s new or not but I don’t remember seeing it before.

How about just resampling in Koala, to make the chain there?
