Koala Sampler App

You can change the default MIDI root note in the settings if that helps

I’ll give that a go. Thank you.

Anyone knows if there is a CCK where you can

  • plug in headphones
  • charge ipad
  • and hook up a midi controller

all at once ? I found something on Amazon with all 3 ports mentioned but it seems to be only working for 2 of the 3 options at the same time.

USB C or lightning?

For now lightning but might buy a newer iPad with usb c soon. So both options would be great to know

There are many usb C options (check around Amazon), for lightning you’d be best served by an affordable usb audio interface. I use a $70 M-Audio interface with my lightning iPad.
I also use my iPads in a desktop type setup normally so it’s not an incredible for me to have extra gear hooked up to it.

Thanks - so I would need to connect a usb hub to CCK so I can hook up audio interface and midi controller at the same time ?

If lightning port, then pretty sure the Korg Plugkey does all 3 at once.

I used to use the cheap amazon lighting adapters w/ 3 usb ports and the charging port. its all worked at the same time. I had no issues with them. even used a usb-a to 3.5mm on them.

if you want a better solution that will last you for a while and has pretty much all the features you’ll need, i use these now:

(supply your own nvme)

(they also look waaaaay bigger online than they are)

Thanks, guys - will check these out

I have a couple of questions about koala:

  • what is the fastest workflow for recording into koala from another app? Say an audio app?

  • similarly, best workflow for sampling onto a pad using other fx? ( like fab filter and eventide fx)

Cheers

Edit - I’m basically wondering if koala on iPad can be a great portable music making device

For both of these, try hosting the Koala AUv3 (audio unit) inside Loopy Pro or Drambo. Or AUM. This will let you easily route audio between apps.

Anybody prefer this to the sp404 mk2? Workflow seems a lot smoother to me.

It is. Only drawbacks are tapping on glass and lousy effects.
Koala should add AU hosting functionality, IMHO.

I’m trying to make Koala work inside Ableton so I can use it with the Push 2, but the AUv3 plugin window just comes up blank white.

hell no lmao. The SP effects alone smoke the effects from Koala. Koala is dope AF tho…Lots of huge potential if they can make a plugin version to work in a DAW, and they revamp the effects.

I haven’t been able to justify buying an MK2 after reading about the workflow. The big selling point for Mk2 vs. other hardware is the portability, but even there it loses to Koala. And now with all the added updates to MK2 people find the workflow more complex with tons of shift + button combos. Koala’s sequencer seems far superior, the ability to so easily sample from any online source (plus the range of amazing iOS synths) and if you don’t like Koala’s effects it’s so easy to add 3rd party FX in AUM, especially using multi-out. And if you want a hardware feel, it’s easy to get a Launchpad X or Beatstep and it’s still a fairly portable setup. I can only see getting an Mk2 if you loved the SP series and don’t already have an iPad.

well, if you use koala on ipad, and you have a rugged case for the ipad, I would say yes, I think koala is sensational. However, when you invest a few hours and watch the tutorials on youtube from reputable people on the 404mk2, it is awesome. Here is one thing that is sick with the mk2…when its connected to your computer via USB C, you can sample direct from anything in your computer…DAW, samples, Youtube…anything. Frankly, if I had an ipad, I agree, I would probably not get the SP404. I would get a really slick ipad case and call it a day

I haven’t used the SP404, but from what I have seen and read, it’s not really that similar to Koala anyway.

I love Koala because it is just so fast. Fast to sample, to chop, to play chromatically, and to sequence. Resampling is also insanely good.

I’m not a fan of the piano roll. I tend to live record, because the roll is too fiddly even on a big iPad.

I’ve spent much of the last week trying to find a way to do this in Ableton, and just the core part of Koala—instant sampling to pads—seems impossible to do in Ableton.

I would like to be able to send Koala’s samples out through third-party FX and re-sample the result, but otherwise it’s almost perfect. It even does a passable job of Live export.

I am a firm believer in trying something myself before making any comparisons. Ive tried both, both are great. Koala effects cant compare to the SP, and Koala has much more immediacy than the SP for specific functions. Both are great
