@micabeza Yes, you are right.
By “BK” I meant the more recent black backs with new pads. That was the one that was advertised on pics, not the one I ended up receiving which was a silver back with old pads.
I’ve seen black blacks with old pads. You can never tell without actually looking at it in person sometimes.
I had a bk that had grey back with old pads. Easy enough to fix but it’s another expense. I’m certain a lot of people selling “pad upgraded” ones are actually selling old style ones. Saw quite a few of them on eBay. One even showed an open unit and they were the old ones but still said pad upgraded
I’m excited to try the 2.5k pads. I know they weren’t plagued with the pad issue
Haha or says “includes JJOS”, but it’s the free version. Classic.
Hahah… yeah. this is all too common as well.
Honestly, I never experienced “the pad issue” with the older pads. The old ones are a bit stiffer, but they never really bothered me. Never had them fail either.
Yeah the one I just bought said it. I said which JJOS? He said ‘can’t check in out at the minute’ lmao. Oh well I’m happy to send bux to JJ
@micabeza mine came with 2 completely dead pads. Just depends on how the MPC was treated to be fair. None of them came out of the shop fucked. I preferred the feel of the pad upgrade anyway. Found the stock pads had squishy corners but they worked fine. No idea about the post-pad issue mpcs
I do wish back in the day I bought the MFC42 to go with the MPC. Things are going for more than the MPCs themselves now if you can even find them.
ha damn you’re not joking they’re expensive now. I always thought they looked hilarious but I’d definitely love to play with one. Spaceship mode. Imagine if akai released something like this now
That’s crazy-looking. I love it! I kind of like the silver on the back. Makes it look heavy duty, industrial. I just love the 1000. I couldn’t deal with the touchscreen on the live 2.
Despite being in Japan, I know very little about the current state of MPC culture here, other than that this guy is where a lot of people get the high-end custom stuff done.

The MPC1K has a really special place in my heart as that’s where it all began for me. That era of MPCs was just so good. I shouldn’t have sold mine but I was really afraid of pad failure and nobody knew what to do about pad failure yet at the time since the original design was different than the older machines. I didn’t want to be stuck with a $1,000 brick, as that was a ton of money to me back then.
As much as I love them, I personally wouldn’t go back. My needs now are a lot different than they were back then.
The whole feel and sound coming out of the 500/1000/2500 and 5000 and before are very different to the new line.Same as in 16 bits but the older ones have a kind of texture/nuance that adds to the vibe.I would recently sample my MPC One into the 1000 and back into the One again also running it through the 1000s master EQ and compressor to beef it up.Brutal…
Just swapped the One with a 5000 and could not be happier. The 5000 sounds really loud, present and alive imo…
I would be careful buying from some of the Japan suppliers tho.I would not be happy about the sellars knowledge of the machine and returning it would be a nightmare.Rather buy from someone who has actually been right through the machine.Theres plenty for sale in the UK already.
Never say never I said exactly the same about a month ago lol. I feel what you’re saying though if you want the modern feature set it’s just part of the deal. Can always keep a 1k on the side and power it up every now and then. They’re cheaper than ever
@monk_1 saw some low priced 5ks online. I think they’re gonna spike in the future too. They’re a bit demonised because of bugs when they first came out and not having all the exact frills of the 4K but they’re like a quarter of the price so who’s complaining. I never got the chance to use one. I like the monster format and the technical specs exceed the other units iirc
Once you get to grips with the 5000 is a monster.Sounds huge….
…mpc’s were big in japan, when akai still was a japanese company…i guess…
before some american frame brand took over…and just kept the basic concept and the name…
…@jb …in case ur still intrested in a mpc 2500, all black with the thick pads (all triggering fine), cd rom drive, full ram, quite some bunch of cv cards full with weird but solid sounds aaaand all running smooth on jjos 3.something…
it’s all urs including shipping from berlin for 600 euros…
ah, come on…500 is also ok…
i got one mpc1000 running jjos still left here, so the bigger one gotto go sooner than later anyways…
I actually love getting used gear from Japan. Mostly I’ve purchased cameras, lenses and music gear and it is always in impeccable condition and shipping to the west coast of the US is often faster and cheaper than from EU/UK
"
I use the One differently than I used the 4000. I export all my stems out of the one, so the timing is straight off the machine and super tight. "
It is great in such discussions to see how people actually use their machines! Your way works perfectly.
We use Midi a lot and switched back to the 4000 (which my studio partner strongly prefers [even in a blind test I did w/ him]).
Sometimes when I work alone on my MPC X I just export the Midi to the 4000 befor he’s back in the studio ![]()
Usually wary about buying gears from overseas. The handful of stuff I’ve gotten from Japanese sellers has been in excellent condition and a wee bit cheaper than what I would’ve gotten locally. But like everything else, gotta check the reviews; especially the bad ones to look for any underhanded behaviour.
Yeah, I have no idea about buying it from overseas, but I buy most of my gear used here in Japan and it’s always been in great condition, especially from dealers. The only time I’ve had an issue has been with cigarette smoke. One amp and one multitrack I have bought absolutely stunk. Both of those were from individuals on the auctions though.
