What’s with the overwhelming number of MPCs coming from Japan on eBay? Do they have a big MPC scene? Got tempted into a 2500 and 90% of the listings are shipping from Japan
It might’ve become easier / cheaper to ship from Japan
EBay might’ve been promoting more in Japan
Flagging something as ‘Japanese’ might convince people it’s better than local market ?
Japanese market might’ve crashed so people can pick one up cheap off yahoo auctions and flip it on eBay ?
All entirely possible. Wonder if a UK plug will fry a Japanese one
A lot of the time also it’s multiple different Japanese shipping company’s selling the same, single item that is listed on a Japanese auction site. So if you buy it on ebay, they will buy it on the Japanese auction site and send it to you.
Do you think they’re legit/reliable? I’m thinking about getting an mpc1000 again. What would you say is a good price? I realize I will probably have to pay for JJOS again and maybe do some upgrades…
MPCs are 110-240v
I wouldn’t pay more than $600 because it will cost $100 I think for JJOS and then you also have to hope the pads were upgraded.
You can skip all this pain and just buy an MPC One. I had both and I find the One to be fantastic. The problem with the 1000 is that it’s simply overpriced right now on the used market for what it is. For example, you can’t export stems out of it, you just have the 6 outs which is pretty limiting.
Just some stuff to think about before dropping the coin.
fwiw I sold my one and I’m thinking of going back to 1k/2500 after much deliberation. It’s a very different experience. I’d go for a 4K if it wasn’t insanely expensive. Fully kitted 4K on eBay right now for £1800. Don’t know if I’d call it overpriced, having a billion features isnt everything it’s cracked up to be. For me anyway
Yeah the 4k was my jam. Amazing MPC, but the new MPCs imo are a better value for the money.
yeah will definitely be scouting for a decent price. I have a feeling that old MPCs are actually in the ditch right now and will get more expensive as the new units lose value. There’s just a massive difference between jamming on the calculator screen vs the new big screens. I personally hate the new GUI. I’d love to see the old format with modern FX / i/o but that is never, ever gonna happen so I might just have to settle for the old. I felt no connection with my mpc one at all. No doubt it can do everything you want it to do but that’s no good if it doesn’t make you WANT to do it. Finding patience for the load times might even do me good
Yeah I used to be the same way, but my productivity levels don’t lie. I get stuff done a lot faster with the One even though yes, I like the old school feel of the MPC1000 and 4k.
I don’t really notice much of a difference anymore, but I used to feel more strongly about that too.
That depends on what characteristics you value.
E.g. in our studio: timing above all else.
I completely cosign this… I tried the one at a friend and the workflow is uninspiring to me. The 1000 with jj os to me has the perfect balance between options and limitations that make your workflow fast and intuitive.
The only downside is the extremely weak fx, but that can be solved with an sp404 on the main outs.
Timing is extremely important for me as well. I use the One differently than I used the 4000. I export all my stems out of the one, so the timing is straight off the machine and super tight.
I also use the same workflow on the One that I used on 4k and 1000. So that’s a non issue for me.
Yeah the internal FX are terrible, but I just placed an order on a 2500 and I’m pretty hyped. I never had 404s and was waiting on the mk2 but tbf I’m thinking of ducking out of the hype and just grabbing an OG or an SX for a great price and I can always pick up a mk2 down the road if I want. Always wanted a 2500 but when I had a 1k it seemed pointless to upgrade to basically the same thing. I’m even caught up looking at 555s too now, caught the bug. Love the look of that simple destructive loop capture workflow
Yeah man do whatever moves you for sure. I wanted to gel with the one badly but it just didn’t do it for me. Produced pretty much nothing of note in my entire time with it
Yeah I’ve owned one before and also had the mpc live 2. I enjoyed the 1000 a little more in hindsight.
Ordered a 1000 on a Japanese store on Reverb. I know my 1000s very well and the one I received was not the slick looking BK I paid for but a clunky old silver back one, caked dust and all. Best of all, the “box” it traveled the world in was a quarter of a centimetre thicker than the mpc itself. I was livid. One of the plastic side cheeks was broken on arrival (no shit) and after plugging it I realised half the controls were not working.
Emailed these guys right away and after Reverb pushed them around as well they agreed to either refund total amount upon receiving it or pay for repairs. Given it took forever for it to arrive I wasn’t goi g to gamble it being lost on its way back to Japan.
Jazzcat MPC repair dude had availability and managed to fix it fairly quickly, which was most welcome.
Didn’t click with that MPC anyway as I wanted a BK one and sold it. Found a BK on this forum shortly after actually hello @plastic_pizza
My point is this. Make sure that they confirm that the MPC is the one on the pictures and make also sure that they package it well. There can be a language barrier so if something isn’t clear after asking several times, run. What a waste of time overall.
The effects are dated but not that bad. They serve their purpose for adding some old timey coloring.
That being said, I used effects on the back end like you.
One of these https://www.esi-audio.com/products/maya44usb+/ connected to the 4 outs into an iPad running Turnado or whatever was fun. Could sample back in or send to the mixer, or both.
There was a run of BKs that had silver backs. There’s nothing different about them. They were just using up stock from the blue ones. One of mine has a silver back. That being said. There’s also a run of the BKs that didn’t have the upgraded pads. So it’s really a mixed bag because there’s no way to tell from a serial or color which one you are actually getting.
