Had to skip yesterday because my 8yo got a surprise jumpscare appendectomy, but she’s doing better! Idk why this (and all??) my stuff is so quiet, and also maybe relatedly why the noisy sample on this sounds so loud - something’s not right somewhere in my setup. It’s a bummer because i think i really like this one! But we’ll fix it in post, that’s a febmuary problem. This is hydra and digitakt 1 with nymphes being a mono monster. Also decided to open with a solo bc whatever
Another day down! Everyone is continuing to post such interesting pieces. Keep exploring, everyone!
some comments
when all of the elements are playing at the same time, and those synths dip into dissonance, something magical happens. I think these elements don’t fit together “smoothly,” but the rough edges give this piece so much more character. It’s like you’re trying to explore as much of what “music” is as you can
the beauty of rules is inevitably breaking them! I really enjoy the lofi feeling in this piece. It’s subdued and contemplative. I also love the melody of this piece! It builds and swells like a tide, and leaves behind little pools full of life as it recedes
excellent job with this piece! Nic , smooth vibes the whole time, and you played the siren wonderfully. Around 5m30s, the way it crackles and gets percussive sounds super cool! I loved the blending of dub techno and more traditional dub. It felt like going through a timeline of dub all played on one device. The sounds get so cool at the end too! The filter pinging sound from the DN2 meshes with that loon call sound you made with the dub siren unexpectedly well
I love the call and response between the synths and the percussion. It’s almost like the synth just hands off the melody to the percs. Great live playing too, as usual! An excellent reminder that I should be using temp save more often
bumpin! The plucked/strummed sounds at the beginning and the end are filled with such nice energy, and those smooth keys that those sounds turn into create a lovely contrast. The bass line during that section is also so groovy. I love how playful and dynamic it is. Great piece! Very uplifting
I can absolutely see this playing during some crazy boss fight in a 2D platformer! Very action/sci-fi oriented. I love the motif right at the end too. It’s a perfect send off for this piece, and exactly what I’d expect to play right when you beat the boss
Side note: my partner and I have been watching AGDQ for many years now, and it’s always such an inspiring start to the year
so when are you playing at Berlin Atonal this year?? This piece is o sick! It’s like I’m listening to you sculpt and chisel out a beat from raw noise mined deep within the earth. The impulse pings into the reverb establish a sense of immense spaciousness, and the way you’re able to crumple up and manipulate the noise is perfection! Irresistibly visual
cozy indeed! I love that pretty, happy-go-lucky melody plodding away in the background, and how the bouncy, energetic drums give the whole piece this feeling of bursting with joy. I also like how the drums are constantly shifting and playing fills; while the melody maintains this sense of comfort and familiarity
great lively vibe on this! The squeaky sound is adorable, and I think it works perfectly with this beat! The percussion has this small but mighty sound to it, like it’s perfectly confident playing these little tiny sounds, and the whole arrangement is all the better for it!
this immediately reminded my of “Carcan” by Boards of Canada (see @kbright, I do know some BoC!), but whereas that song is somewhat of a precursor to vaporwave, your piece is more like diving deep underwater and passing by all the weird and wonderful life that live in those volcanic vents. Filled with small, bubbly disturbances that can’t ever unsettle the greater homeostasis
dark and epic! I love how the snare feels unstuck in time. The intro marimbas are appropriately spooky and unsettling, and do a perfect job setting up the headspace for the rest of the piece. I like how minimal the arrangement is as well. Everything feels like it’s contributing something specific to the structure of the piece
welcome back! I love the comparison, in your post, that you make between these kinds of jams and sketches. Learning how to be quickly and specifically intentional is a skill worth pursuing, but you’re right to balance that with deep introspection. I hope you are able to find a balance that befits you!
The piece you made has a fantastic physical sound to it, and the arrangement with the drums keeps the momentum up while still allowing you to explore more of those synth timbres. The drums provide a nice structure for the generative melody to bounce around inside of
big and bouncy! I like how tonal the kick is, and the swing do be swingin! It’s a super dense piece, but nothing feels like it’s clashing with anything else. I liked the performative fills as well
I love how the melody shifts from being an arp, to this plucked sound, to this smooth lead sound! That gave this piece this incredible sense of flow. And that groovy breakdown right before the outro is excellent. I also quite enjoy those round, lower midrange chords
there is a lovely neo-folk quality to this piece that is quite entrancing! The sound worlds you capture are simultaneously otherworldly and deeply terrestrial. Like they’re from a completely alien planet that also perfectly mirrors our own. Abstractions begot from play. Like a Cy Twombly painting made of sound
cool sounds! I like how those higher tones start out in the background, but you start to highlight them more as the piece progresses. I especially like how the sequence moves between playing fast and slow. That contrast makes the piece feel like it’s breathing (especially towards the middle). You also make this lovely melodic resolution after things seem to get a little out of control (in a good and interesting way!) near the end
this is fun! I like how “messy” everything sounds (maybe “human” is a better word?), especially given you’re using a grid based sequencer. Those micro timings are doing a lot. Beautiful jangly piano sound too. Next up you’re clearly gonna sequence some Conlon Nancarrow, right??
I love how huge this sounds at the end! I like how noisy and glitchy it is, but it is a touch quiet (as you mentioned), so those elements don’t stand out as much as they could! I think the overall sound design is great, and I even love that loud bark sound that comes in near the end
I really love those clicky hi hats! And those long, bendy notes making up the melody sound awesome! I especially love the bass that comes in about half way through the piece. Whatever is going on with that sound at the end is dope!! It sounds like it’s getting ripped apart at the bits, and it emerges like a rolling thunderstorm
that opening sound is so grainy! And the way the beat bursts through it is incredible. It’s like it jumped right out from the static. I love how this piece keeps evolving too. There are so many new elements being added, but it’s never too much at once to appreciate how the piece is developing
lovely vibe! The flourishes you add on the piano and in your guitar playing always feel so soulful, so I like that this piece got to feature a lot of those little licks. This piece is filled with so many nice moments. It’s like looking back at pictures with friends
this sounds like desolation! The uncontented scream into the void of an uncaring world. A snapshot of the feeling of the present moment, in many ways. I appreciate that, despite the dissonance at the beginning, you always manage to make these pieces end hopefully. It’s a very cathartic feeling
beautiful tones on this piece! It starts off feeling untethered and flying around almost formlessly, and then the melody comes in to give the piece a sense of direction. I love how all the synths come together to build out the piece as well. There’s a sense of ascending up some path formed by the synths, until those ratcheting percs come in. At that point, the whole piece just lifts off the ground and floats there
I love how the reverb is acting as its own instrument, and not just an ambient background layer! I quite enjoy how it catches and blurs the more noisy elements at the beginning. It gives the piece this hazy feeling, like you’re experiencing it from afar through a sheet of smoke. I also like how long you wait before bringing the melody in. You really let the atmosphere build up before introducing it, so it has a much bigger impact
that pattern on the chord stabs is very hypnotic! It’s a little unpredictable at first, but once you acclimate to the rhythm it sounds like it couldn’t be any other way. I also really like those delicate synth sounds you add towards the end. They feel like they’re fluttering out from the background
This was a journey, the kind that I like: from surprise to surprise, the initial note, the beat dropping, the last section, reaching far and wide and blending elements not expected to be found together. Loved it!
