Snippet of a jam I was working on… Sampled the chords from the modular rig, Acid Rain Chainsaw… some other random samples in there as well, a lot of Grainer. The bass is the Minifreak, everything processed and recorded through Tonverk., Printed it in Ableton, with a little OTT and a Limiter on the master… Enjoy!

I’ve been watching a bunch of speedruns (happy AGDQ to all who celebrate), and playing the Advance Wars series on a little handheld emulator that my wife got me for Christmas. Videogame music was bound to come out at some point!

First time working with the Deluge and Digitakt together, and I really think they pair nicely. Programming drums on the Digi is a delight, but when I’m punching in notes, I prefer a piano roll. Both are taking their clock sync from Reaper.

Didn’t want to spend too much time on this, so just using some slightly altered Deluge presets that I think work decently well here.

I used only the noise engines and one impulse engine cause I couldn’t resist (yes it’s a joke but it’s also true)

Day 10: I wish I mixed this better to highlight these cool glitches in some of the stems, but it is what it is!

I like to use Jamuaries sometimes to practice making quick mixing decisions and explore different techniques. I haven’t done that much this time, but I’ll get there by the end of the month.

Inspired by the amazing dnb battle playlist that I checked out this morning
A few elements from old abandoned projects combined with some new stuff
Chopped a bit from outtakes of a marimba recording I did during the summer
Just playing with mutes on the OT/DT to arrange it

Very Twin Peaksy mood in this one! Sounds great!

Fuck yeah man!!
Your use of sounds is v stylish. You use sounds that feel cold and distant to me and still you pretty much constantly manage to make them so moody and quite original.

Quick n’ dirty. Venturing into new territories. Playing with Live 12’s MIDI generators, Tension, LFO – things I used to avoid because they were outside of my comfort zone. But because this Jamuary thing is low-risk and because I had no idea how to kick off this jam, I just went for it. Turns out there is some really cool potential there.

I think I now understand the appeal of Jamuary, for me. It’s more about divergence than convergence. There is too little time allotted per jam to really chase after a perfect sound, but there is just enough time to quickly dip toes into this or that puddle.

I recently went to an exhibition of Gerhard Richter (highly recommended). Apart from his massive works, there were also on display lots and lots of very small pencil sketches which it appears he drew in minutes and largely by letting his subconscious take the lead. They were not about perfection or detail – they were broad-strokes explorations of form, composition, tension.

Sounds obvious that that’s what jams are about, when you think about it, but before joining this challenge I was too focused on “results” because I had forgotten the role and importance of exploration. Of course if this is all one does, then there will never be anything finished, so these jams do need to be balanced out by deeper working sessions where intention plays a larger role. If finished music of quality is the goal, that is.

Recorded my toddler son strumming guitar, didn’t get enough for the length of the song so I had to rewind and slow down at the end. Put some synth in near the end, not sure if it was loud enough.
