Jam number 10; all in the box.

Emit and Spectranaut M4L devices provided the harmonies and chopped up and FXed DFAM loops provided the beat.

I forgot to label this as ‘Jamuary’ because I can’t do new tracks every day, but enjoy this bouncy electro/IDM thing. Sounds from MPC, sequences from an Oxi One.

Day 10. Missed a few days but nice to catch up with this thread. There is so much great stuff here, I’ll probably be listening through to August! Love the spontaneous nature of it. Also the comments and messages from others (@tovia especially) are making this a fantastic thread! Thanks to all and looking forward to the remainder of the month.

Tape loops, Tonverk, guitar and Lyra 8 for day 10

I love how you all are starting to branch out into different avenues! I was a bit tired today, so feedback might be a little more sparse than it has been, but I’m happy to have been able to listen to all that you are posting

some comments

I really like how you focused the percussion in this piece. It helps that bass melody stand out more. The rhythms are busy and skittery, which plays beautifully against the slow, chill pads. This would be an excellent interlude track on an album

wild! At first, everything feels like it was sampled from retro video game sounds (I know you synthesized everything yourself, but the arrangement has a cool sample-choppy feel to it to me), and then, around half way through, the pads fill up the piece and the harsher sounds get smoothed into a wonderfully bubbly sound world. I love the energy in this and how unpredictable the arp sequence is

this is such a relaxing atmosphere! I like how everything isn’t perfectly in tune with everything else, so most of the time each element feels like it occupies its own space, but you get these beautiful moments where the singing has to subtly modulate or add vibrato to reach out and really blend the sounds together. Then, when the singing drops out, the pads and the pluck sound feel like they drift away from each other; back into their own spaces

I love trying to make tracks out of just one sound! Nice job making a cool snare out of that kick, and those high clicks are a perfect hi hat replacement. You also have some cool flourishes on that bass that you’re using as turnaround phrase! There is one particular sound that is flicking back and forth through the piece that sounds like a metal doorstop that I adore

sounds like a futuristic percussion ensemble! The rhythms mesh together in interesting ways, and the density of the piece makes it kinda hypnotic too. A veritable city bustling with unique characters. I like the way you slowly introduce more and more elements as well, so the piece never feels like there’s too much going on at once. I can easily see getting lost in this jam for a good amount of time

this piece goes places! The intro really sets the listener up for a slow, cathartic drone, but then you add those pulsing elements just before 2m in, and the whole piece takes on a completely new shape! It’s like you’re barreling through the earth at 1000mph. The timbral manipulation gives the piece even more structure by making it feel like you’re traveling through different biomes

Side note: “emendations” is a wonderful that I haven’t encountered before

the first piece starts off feeling like it’s spatially contained, like it’s in a box or a room or something, but as the arrangement builds and the intensity rises, you manage to escape the confines of the box to explore some larger encompassing space

I love how the galloping, resonant synths give rise to this emergent percussion. It’s like a whole world is contained inside those synths, but we can only ever get a small glimpse into it

funky little piece! I really like the use of punch-in effects that you’ve been showcasing throughout the month. You do a great job making this short loop into something dynamic and interesting to dance to. I particularly liked the moment at 1m30s

kudos to all those musicians you’re clearly keeping locked in your head! The acoustic drums add so much to this kind of composition. I love the kind of tightrope walk that live bands walk when they first start a song, and I think this piece captures that feeling perfectly. Everything comes together exactly as it feels like it should. The small synth accents are just the icing on this already excellent cake

I love the message behind your lyrics! The impact wouldn’t be as great if you didn’t have those “imperfections”. The effects also compliment your lyrics with how they kinda tear at the song and phase everything. I think you did a wonderful job creating a truly pure and personal piece of art, and, while it may not be universally accessible, it means a lot to me :purple_heart:

the pads are so cloudy! Like they’re playing through a thick haze on a particularly foggy day. I like how simple the drums are too. It lets you really sit in this nice, refreshing atmosphere. If you didn’t have the drums, this piece could be a Silent Hill safe room track (but I like the drums)

my partner says this piece sounds like what Mowgli heard when he was hypnotized by the snake in the Jungle Book, and I have to concur! It’s entrancing and a little sinister, but in a playful way. I love those glitchy metallic sounds that tail the muttered voice lines

I like this arrangement style a lot! It’s like you’re doing some kind of ritual with the soundscape, and then summoning the structure and the harmonies for you to cast a spell over. The first time I listened to this piece, everything felt very spontaneous and kind of chaotic, but after subsequent listens, it’s very clear how the elements in the first section come together to build out the second section, and it’s quite satisfying to hear those pieces slot into place

I like that melody playin on top. I kept singing along to it even after the piece was done. The swung shaker-like sound is so bouncy and fun, and I always enjoy how huge your mixing sounds

the swing in this is so sick! It’s like you’re throwing the percussion onto the beat as it’s playing, and watching it stick and drip down the walls, and that outro transition is pure butter. The static sound introduced at the very end is lovely as well. I also really enjoy the aesthetic of your videos! The framing is so distinct

epic! Like a grand odyssey distilled into five minutes. There’s so much emotion poured into every note, and it feels like you’re taking the listener along through something difficult, and guiding them to somewhere safe; all the while knowing the journey will inevitably lead to change. I appreciate how it feels like there are setbacks and obstacles that you end up overcoming. That, specifically, is what makes this piece feel like a story

very cerebral piece! I like how the beginning sounds like you’re listening to a party happening somewhere else, until the saxophone comes and breaks down your wall to bring the party directly to you

great piece! Quite electrifying, and the live playing sounds great! The atmosphere is nice and dark, and I love how those filter sweeps sound through that delay. It’s a tried and true technique, but you still managed to make it sound interesting, and the rest of the piece is well setup to compliment those sweeps

I love those textures from the pads. Emit is one of my all time favorite M4L devices (you could count the time I’ve listened to generative pieces made with this device in days), and hearing it used in such a structured way is lovely. I like how the drums start out chaotic and kinda baffling with their panning, but quickly get settled by that pad that fills in everything, and the way you evolve the pads’ timbres is a joy to listen to. My favorite moment is probably at around 1m30s

I like how the melody starts out very angular and intrusive in the beginning, but you manage to slowly build it up more and more until it completely takes over the whole piece and pushes the drums out. The visuals are really nice too! Reminiscent of things I’ve made in touchdesigner

the way you use dissonance throughout this piece is great! It’s impressive how you’re able to make these individually dissonant moments, but the dissonance doesn’t fully take over the whole track. I also love how the noise from the tape seeps into the piece toward the end. This piece is both beautiful and eerie

the layering in this is phenomenal! It’s like going through a portal from this cold and mechanical world to a place full of machine life. Emergent processes guided by stochastic functions. The hi hat pumping out the hiss of life until it isn’t needed anymore. Incredibly dreamy stuff

Seriously nice one. I especially like how the lower frequency kicks in around the 1:30 after the break. Also, In the best of ways, the intro Immediately reminded me of Jimi Hendrix “Foxey Lady” and “Are You Experienced?”

I forgot about Emit. I’ve only used it for sound design so far, but I remember thinking it’d be a good one to use for a track. I’m adding that to my Jamuary to-do-list.

I’m on a bit of a mission to use more M4L devices this month as I haven’t touched Celestine, and barely used Spectranaut since getting it.

Again, nice track!

thanks for the kind words! stacking compressors is my bread and butter, the other day one of my tracks was crazy loud when i was feeding it into the 404 but the input level monitor wasnt even showing it as being that loud, thats how i know when i gotta dial back the ep133/op-xy compressors a little bit lol

Thank you! And of course, thanks @tovia for their thoughts.

There’s some seriously accomplished music ITT, especially considering that they’re jams.

It’s frankly adorable!

Missed a day because I went to jam with some friends. We do improv stuff in my buddy’s garage. I take a feed from my friend’s guitar into my digitakt and live sample and play the parts back. Super fun but none of us were on our A game. Not all went to waste: I grabbed a sample of our drummer talking to throw on last night’s jam.

This one’s super dumb. If I had it to over again I’d spend more time on manipulating the vocal and drums and I feel like the synth work clashes with the tone set by the vocal sample. But whatever, less time than usual and no time to redo things. Onward!

Is there a rule about editing? So far I’ve only posted live jams but on some I’ve edited out a few bars here & there where they felt boring.
