I think the Virus still wins the bang for buck comparison. Voice count is impressive and the effect section is far richer than the one on the digitone 2. A desktop version was about 1600 euro on Thomann before discontinuation.
But of course, the digitone 2 is simply AVAILABLE. So yeah, I agree that there’s nothing, to my knowledge, that beats it currently.
WAVETONE is 90% of the synth!
Yes, this is the thing that isn’t obvious with these boxes. They’re actually 16 powerful synths in one (or 12 if it’s a Syntakt…etc).
If you add up the cost of 16 monosynths from Behringer, or three or four cheap polysynths, then these are cheap. 
(and you still didn’t sequence all those monosynths… this has sequencing, too)
There’s limitations for sure, eg. only one shared FX unit across all voices but you can’t complain about value for money.
(but other people can ask how much money is too much money for just a hobby 
)

i have a blofeld desktop with the optional sample update. this thing packs a lot of sound design potential ( 3 oscillator, dual parallel or serial filter , 3 or 4 enveloppes and lfo , powerfull matrix mod etc). back then i spent a lot of time designing sounds on it.you can even create your own wavetables and import into it. using it without a pc editor is a pita. digitone is the sum of all parts ,way easier to dial interesting sounds and the sesquencer brings to life. i had a virus also inthe past. i.ve never done greatest music anywhere else than digitone and 2, even with more powerfull synths. This all comes to ease of use and a flow state you reach so easilly with elektron machines and also the soundlocks and param locks makes for very deep sound design and original music on its own.
Blofeld has been out for almost two decades. I had a DN1 + Blofeld setup for a while that was a joy to use. The Blofeld hardware is a bit unwieldy to use when going beyond VA, but as a sound module it’s a workhorse.
It does great kicks. Wavetone can do all the sounds you are getting from e.g. a Bass Station II or anything Dual VCO Monosynth (but there’s of course Track Layering to get more VCOs!). Mod Setup where up to four parameters can be assigned to things like Key Tracking, Velocity, …

Also, with the LFOs you can achieve audio rate modulation, so FM is possible even with Wavetone. And you can layer a Wavetone track with a FM Drum track just to add a sample transient for a more convincing drum sound.
Both sounded incredible but that first one is absolutely blowing my mind.

This machine is such a happy accident generator. I usually never know what kind of sound I want to make but always something cool comes out.
How about some early '90s rompler stuff, like choirs and the whole Röchel/Hauch/Klingel madness. The cheesier, the better!
