this is something i think about a lot. ive never heard better demos/songs from a single elektron device than the modl:cycles. the fine tuning of the timbres on that thing is so well crafted and perfect, and the fast workflow of the simplified interface combined with the power of the sequencer and synthesis makes it so versatile for “groovebox”-style compositions.
i do feel similarly about the digitone. it was my first elektron synth, before i got a bunch of other gear. so i spent the most time with it out of any piece of gear ive ever owned. i remember getting frustrated by the kind of lack of synthesis options and the slightly same-y fm timbre/color coming out of every patch. but its not really that limiting in reality. ive since learned how to go even deeper with it. but this does make me appreciate the dn2 even more, now that we can ring mod and cross-mod between va wave shapes without the weird workarounds. so much more versatile as far as the tones you can get out of it, and i do prefer the sound of the new fm machine. more tracks and drum-specific machines was something i always wanted too. because i would take only the digitone with me to work and would end up wishing i brought a small capable drum machine with the same sequencing ability as an elektron box. so it was kind of perfect for me in many ways
but when i was limited to 4 tracks only, i really got the most out of it. one for lead, one for bass, one for more pad-like synth, one for sound-locked drum patches. it might be because i havent had nearly the same amount of time to sit down with just the dn2 as i did with the og dn. but it does seem like you really could get more out of this elektron box than any of the others. 16 tracks with that much synthesis power really is crazy. but i understand and appreciate the limitations of the older boxes
maybe someday ill have time to really dive into this thing and make the most of it. maybe if we have another 2021 lockdown scenario. those were peak digitone times for me. i would take my dn, launchpad pro, and bastl thyme with me every night, put on The Langoliers or The Shining, and go to town on that thing. my dream is to retire to the forest, live in a cabin with just a desk-worth of gear, and have no other obligations except for sound designing on my elektron boxes

Don’t have DN2 but curious, is it possible to create kicks with Wavetone machine?

I would say yes, but you’d have to use LFOs to sculpt the pitch sweep and click. Whereas FMDrum has built-in sweep controls and sampled transients.
Wavetone has some advantages for making interesting drum sounds though, eg. sharp, analogue-like waveforms, and PWM.

One thing that’s kinda blowing my mind when it comes to the Digitone II is the multi-timbrality aspect.
Like, for example, lets just take the Wavetone engine.
Ignore FM, ignore Swarmer, ignore FM Drum, ignore the sequencer. Yes, ignore 90% of the capabilities of the synth.
This is a 16-part multi timbral VA synth, where the 16 voices can be allocated in any way you want across the parts. There isn’t a single VA synth in existence that is this powerful at this price point. Hell, I can’t think of a single VA synth at any price point that is this powerful.
Am I misunderstanding something here, or am I wrong in some way I can’t see? After being disappointed in the limitations of the Digitone 1, I can’t believe this new model is so damn powerful.

Spot on. I’ve been using only Wavetone lately. There is a lot of depth to just that one engine. I rarely need more than 4 tracks which leaves me plenty of voices per track! My favorite Elektron box. I bought a Tonverk at release but I think I’m going to sell it and just focus on the DN2.

Right, so the only comparable synth to the Digitone 2 (stripped down) is:
A. Twice the cost
B. Discontinued

Blofeld does VA, 16 part multitimbral, arp, sequencer. Never tried one though.

I’m fond of Blofeld, but found myself creating patches that would cap polyphony to 2 or 3 voices… the polyphony and multi-timbrality were kind of theoretical rather than practical
Yeah, I’m fighting off any urges to buy any other synths because the DN2 really is so capable. I did get the Blofeld app on iPad to play around with though.
