Isla Instruments Caladan

You know, as cool as this looks, I’m not sure how I feel about Isla as a company. They’re about to develop a whole ass synthesizer before they get around to adding the sequencer they promised in the Kordbot however long ago.

Wait… I’m confused. Did Isla Instruments acquire Futuresonus?

I invested in the Parva, early on in its development, hoping to use it as a sound module for my LinnStrument. It seemed ideal, complete with a USB host port and the promise of MPE. But development stalled, and I bailed because it was fraught with bugs. On top of that, I was eyeballs deep in the Tempest firmware fiasco at the time, and simply didn’t have the bandwidth for another perpetual beta project.

As I recall, shortly thereafter, support fell off; and, as I understood it, they folded.

Anyway, it’s a great design… Here’s hoping they pull it off this time.

It seems we’ve traded one Brad at the helm for another.

Cheers!

Very excited for this! The individual outs make me think multitimbrality which is clutch. Might not get one immediately as I already have a spazedrum to do analog percussive stuff, but maybe I’ll hold off on a microwave?

Given that it’s lengths seems to match that of the S2400 I bet those screens are bigger then you’d expect. The S2400 is pretty damn large.

If you’re already an existing customer of mine, I always give a priority, early bird discount.

The kordbot was released in 2015, 8 years ago.
It was developed as much as I could manage.
I over-delivered on what people originally purchased the machine for, just look at the difference in the hardware that people backed on kickstarter, compared to what they actually got.

People like to nail me to the cross because I didn’t deliver that feature on the kordbot, I’ve apologized about as much as I can. It was my first rodeo, I made mistakes, and got better at what I do.

If a programmer wants to contact me with a solid idea of how we can actually implement a working, practical, useful sequencer into the kordbot, I will pay them to do so.

My limited team and resources can’t stretch to implementing this in a now discontinued product.

Again, apologies, but I have to move on.

Well, off topic but while you’re here… any updates on s2400 daughter cards? :grimacing:

Thanks. Really excited for them. S2400 is the best sounding sampler I own (and I own a stupid amount).

I have not acquired Brad’s company FutureSonus, I have acquired all IP pertaining to the Parva.

afaik most if not all original concerns for bugs etc were fixed.

Yes I love my s2400, can’t wait for this one! Glad to hear existing customers get a discount. Thanks for bringing us great instruments, and I’m happy to see you on the forum again!

@bradholland Any plans to have an EU distributer?

I appreciate the prompt reply, Brad. Thank you.

I do wish you well in this pursuit, and might consider adding a Caladan to my live rig, as per my original aspirations, depending on where you take it as a synth and sound module.

I’ll be watching its development closely.

Cheers!

I’ve often wondered if there’s room for a ‘synth’ cartridge platform … an industry standard established similar to a games console.

Different companies making synth carts to various base units … smaller companies making the cartridges ( less investment ) …larger companies make various base units of different price points .

I hope this new box is a success :+1:

I’m not trying to nail you to the cross. I don’t think you or anyone else needs to be sacrificed to atone for the many sins of the industry.

I guess I never got the message that the Kordbot had been discontinued. I also wasn’t part of the kickstarter. I didn’t know how far back that project went or that it was officially over. I just knew that if you try to choose the sequencer on the machine it says “coming soon”. And I thought that was kind of funny, especially given how ambitious the Caladan looks.

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing how the Caladan turns out. It looks really cool even if I’ll probably never be able to afford one myself.

Considering Isla’s got the IP to a very functional, fantastic synth that already went into production I’d say it’s a pretty solid endeavor. The number of future alternate voice cards definitely remains to be seen and probably hinges greatly on how much interest Caladan generates.

I had a Parva for a while and seriously miss it at times. I’d be stoked to have it back regardless of the future variety of different voice cards. This looks super exciting to me and makes me want to finally pull the trigger on a S2400 to pair them up. Definitely keeping a close eye on this.

I would love that too…

The more I think about it, the more I’m interested in maybe grabbing a Caladan when they are available. I’ve always wanted a versatile analog multitimbral synth, and wow does the Caladan look to provide that.

Do I understand right that all “analog synth circuitry” will be housed in the voice cards? But the playback of soundfonts comes from the base Caladan unit? Will the soundfonts be able to be routed through the sound cards? Or at least the analog sound cards?

For real can you post a link to whatever this is, I’ve been dreaming up exactly one of these… synthing hurts my eyes and I don’t want to get glasses
