In my experience computer DAWs are still far superior for arranging. But if you want to try out the iOS way without needing a subscription, you could try Cubasis.
I make full tracks in Koala. I host it in AUM, bounce everything to audio and use the multi outs to create signal paths. I donāt automate, I just map things to faders and play the desk 90s style
Iāve hesitated to ask this because I kind of feel like a ding dong for not understanding. But, is there a way to sample from one iPad app directly in to Koala? Iāve looked at Drambo and AUM but canāt seem to grasp the concepts. Like, if I wanted to get a sound from iMS-20 in to Koala, what would be the most streamlined way?
Our own @PeteSasqwax made an excellent video on using AUM to do this. His video is about resampling, but youāll also see how AUM works. Itās really easy.
One thing: you actually get 3 AUv3 extensions when you install koala. One midi, one āinstrument,ā and one āaudio effect.ā The one you need is the audio effect, or FX (i donāt remember the exact name).
Thatās the only one that lets you record into it.
Iāve been experimenting with Koalaās Ableton export, because while I LOVE koala, especially in AUM, I have way too many half-baked ideas in there, just hanging around.
I finally worked out what the Ableton export actually does, and I think Iām going to be finishing a lot more songs.
It also makes me way more likely to start ideas in Koala. Not that you really need any help. Every time I launch it to check a setting, bangers start falling out.
I think the beauty of sampling other things into Koala is twofold: the first is that it creates a workflow which is very similar to the one Jonwayne uses on Jon Makes Beats, which I think is completely conducive to finishing things without getting bogged down in the minutiae; the second is that it makes it very easy to export to Ableton and so all the finishing touch stuff without having to worry about those happening on iOS
Iāve been a long-time lurker here (probably 2+ years - visiting and reading virtually every day ) but your question got me to finally register and create an account.
Iām going through this process right now. Been trying all kinds of approaches. Like you, Iāve tried (and successfully) used Drambo. But Iāve been exploring quicker and easier ways to achieve this. I donāt own AUM (and Iāve been on a mission to do everything I want to do without getting it - as itās not the workflow I really want to use)
This works and very easy. Use Wavebox Audio Editor - this can record any sound/app - use Record internal > Start Broadcast.
Then Save > select WAV > Open In and you have Koala as an option. It sends audio file directly to Koala.
My latest approach - was experimenting last night - is using EG Nodes. You can record Midi etcā¦, then click on the tape record icon to record.
Or play live (for example have drums playing in Koala and record) and click the tape record icon. When you finish recording it also gives you an option to send to Koala.
Iām kinda liking this, as I can use all my AUV3 plugins / Midi FX etcā¦. (Iām still getting my head fully around EG Nodes)
Another approach is using Audiobus. Was using this for a while - but prefer (1/2 above), as Audiobus likes to take control of everything. However you can record IAA apps to Koala. It is a good workflow too.
Using AudioShare - but limited to only the select few apps that appear there - good for IAA apps.
Drambo is another good way - but this involves working in Drambo. You can load a project - record, then go back to Koala standalone.
To record in Drambo - add your instrument > then load Koala as a āProcessorā and click on the headphone icon in Koala.
