iPad Music Apps?

I find grand finale 1 better IMO, more simple and to the point. Am I missing something big?

Yeah as @resocut mentioned, I use Reelbus and MBC from Toneboosters, tasty tasty tasty :yum:
Actually all the Toneboosters apps are very high quality :eyes:

Support for the App

I got this great advice on using iOS as an end of chain device in another thread:

Thank you folks! I’m still trying to figure out the best template to route stuff, and AUM is really a gem for that.

Once that is done I’ll give a shot at your suggested apps

On a side note, it is incredible how useful and straightforward the iPad is for the task, and then you have also a gazillion tools for sound generation/mangling/fxs and all the midi crazyness.

I’ve to just find an easy way to share AUM recordings with my Android phone/windows PC to quickly come up with a finished audio/video content

LK is my favourite IOS auv3 sequencer. It’s the only one that doesn’t feel compromised when trying to make more than loops (haven’t used Drambo tho).

Never tried using LK with Ableton, it feels kinda superfluous compared to dedicated 3rd party controllers like the launchpad.

It feels like LK was switched to give the Ableton clip launch vibe in IOS with the inclusion of templates for specific apps. If only Imaginando would add new apps.

Get this: AUM (it’s a mixer and a ā€œtape recorderā€), audioshare (super helpful to keep track of your jams, cut stuff, it’s organized automatically by date, and channel, etc.).

I also put Grand Finale 2 on everything. Limiter Compression Dist, etc. All in one.

Honestly that’s it. Maybe get some fx for your synths.

The only problem is if you want to keep it in sync, aum only can send clock. But for audio 10/10.

I tried briefly Bark Filter and… Wow, It is really awesome! It instantly sparked an hefty amount of life into my mix I really couldn’t belive it.

It’s incredible how much you can add to your music for so little money, and this is also valid for the iPad in itself: I spent a lot of time researching the best EoC hardware when all I needed was an iPad.

And, yet again, that’s just a couple cheap apps in an universe of other stuff you can do with it.

Thanks for pointing me toward @mcmeex post, Keybits.

Now I’m curious to find out about all the other very much appreciated suggestions!

Yep, GF2 seems to be widely suggested, thanks!

I have to take a look at Audioshare as well, could be handy to share things around.

Strokes is one of my favorite music apps on the iPad, and now the developer Cong Burn has a new amazing synth/sequencer/loop/granular-thingy out now called Stacks. It’s pretty wild and original with a beautifully designed interface. Confusing at first, but actually quite efficient, when you get the logic, and totally the kind of stuff, that makes me love making music on the iPad.

This one is probably the best demo/intro to what it can do:

Looks great! It seems you can’t get any external input to the effect section, right?
DSP at 50% with only Stacks is a bit heavy, but it does a lot.

Anyone on this thread using a new ipad air for music production?

It’s time to update mine and would like to go for the larger screen but the large pro is too rich for me.

Will it be able to handle processing? Can it power a connected controller?

Thanks

I’m currently using the latest iPad Air 13 inch.

The TouchID button is a bit wobbly - more than my 5th Gen Air.

Except for that tiny thing, it’s rock solid. Can’t see it sweat for now.
I’m using it for music production, administrative purposes, web browsing and score editing/reading. It just works.
It can power controllers, but ymmv. It’s always best to consider a powered hub.
Depending on your use case, tho, I’d purchase wisely its cover. The Magic Keyboard is really great when working with text edit, mixing duties and general workflow. But when recording and editing in LogicPro, I prefer the SmartCover since it’s not getting in the way as the MK does.

Anyways.
Works great.
Got me the 256Go version. It’s reliable and sturdy enough.

I am not. However, from everything I have read by lurking on the Audiobus forum, it does not matter what current iPad model you opt for, they can all handle what you are likely to throw at them, unless you are doing very serious audio processing, or have heavy video ambitions. As for powering controllers, you really should use a powered hub or camera kit to make sure there is enough juice. Some controllers will work, some will suck too much power, you don’t want to be worrying about any of that. If you want to use one in a portable situation, you need to do more research.

I got the 13" Air a few months ago, very impressed. Using Logic as my home bass and it’s been able to take anything I can throw at it so far and for the foreseeable future. Integration with Logic on my desktop is seamless subject to a few little issues like track/project alternatives not working in the iPad version, hopefully that will come eventually.

Not using a keyboard but I do have the Pencil Pro which I think is amazing - I was saying elsewhere that when you’re getting into detailed editing in Logic it kinda feels like you’re writing a symphony … in a good way.

I upgraded from a 9th gen and Logitech Crayon which I gave to my kid, every time I pick up his it feels like a toy by comparison. But it did the job while I was using it.

I’ve powered my SP404mkii over usb and it’s a killer combination. Haven’t used any other controllers, I usually use the 404 for audio/midi IO as well as for 404 things, and that has worked great alongside stuff like the Ableton Pushin standalone.
