yes, notably for beat making with a sample library → Digistix 2 and Loopy Pro are great for this purpose.
I haven’t found the need to pick up AUM yet…I don’t really get the point of it if you’re working with a program that can load Audio Units anyways…or am I missing something?
If Drambo is my main IOS DAW and I can use all my other plugins inside Drambo, that way I can use the Drambo sequencer w/ parameter locks on the AU then why bother with AUM?
Three synths I really like are Moog Model 15, the Modosc Designs ID700 which is emulating a digital Buchla synth called the Buchla 700, and Primal Audio FM4 which is a pretty straightforward 4-op FM synth.
I use some of the Eventide H9 FX because I really like Eventide, and Rozeta for Midi LFO:s.
And I really should get into Loopy Pro. Seems awesome.
AUM is a flexible audio and Midi mixer which allows you to configure a modular setup for the way you might want to make music. It’s a Swiss Army knife of audio and midi on the iOS platform and honestly there’s nothing else like it on any platform.
DAWS and grooveboxes will get you far on iOS but AUM will allow you to be creative in so many ways that it feels magical to setup and perform with.
I used it like an audio mixer synced with a midi controller. I liked how it is on screen for mixing and using sends.
Could probably do it all in Drambo but it just worked for me recording live jams plus I had hardware going into it that I could record and mix with the iPad apps and have fx on those channels
If Drambo is doing everything you need and you’re happy with it, then no need for AUM (yet) I’d say. When/if the time comes that Drambo can’t do something, then maybe it’s time to look at AUM.
I’ve used AUM since around 2016, but now I tend to use Loopy Pro as I’m creating/using pre recorded loops all inside
of it as it can easily host AU’s.
AUM doesn’t have clock in, maybe one day soon…but is fantastic and a joy to use none the less.
It’s mainly about the interface/workflow.
AUM and Loopy Pro are more performance-oriented than focused on sequencing.
AUM is set up as more of a traditional mixer interface (with a lot of power), while Loopy lets you create custom control surfaces.
It’s probably a lot easier to find a good video overview demonstrating why you might want to use AUM than have someone describe it to you.
But the nice thing is that most of these ‘hosts’ can also be loaded as an AUv3 plugin in other apps - so you can set things up however you prefer.
I don’t know if this will end up sounding overly complex, but as an example you could have AUM hosting:
- Drambo for your drums
- Loopy Pro for vocal looping
- Other channels for synths.
- And on the side, you have a MIDI rack with generators for your synths.
Each of these channels gets a fader, and can have its own effects chain.
Each effect within that chain can have a macro control assigned, and the effects can easily be pulled in/out of the chain by swiping on them.
And you can set up traditional effect sends/buses as well, if you want to use that in a performance.
AUM also has some very nice MIDI routing capabilities, and can work as a multi-track audio recorder (I’m not sure whether Drambo can also do that?).
It can, and it does it really well! You can easily collect stems or a main mix, or both.
I used to use AUM as my host, but now that Drambo is out and mature I use Drambo and almost never use AUM. AUM is a bit simpler to do complex AUv3 <-> AUV3 routings with audio and MIDI, but otherwise Drambo just has so many additional features that there’s no need to use AUM if you’re happy doing everything in Drambo.
Does Drambo have multi out support for AUV3s that its hosting?
Yes!
Drambo is my default tool to create full tracks – either in software or with external hardware.
(e.g. MC-707, or MC-101 + Circuit Tracks, or even Syntakt)
it’s super cool for arrangement if you like the workflow (however, quite a few people don’t and would prefer regular DAW timeline).
i even bought desktop Mac Mini M1 mainly to get Drambo on desktop as well.
Same with me. I used to use AUM mainly because of IAA, but now Drambo 100%. I really like how the interface is arranged in Drambo - everything in its place and at hand.
Do you guys use Drambo with soft synths, or is it good for recording/mixing as well?
I’m trying to integrate the iPad with my hardware studio, both as an effects process and as a machine for recording/arranging/mixing. So far I’ve been using Cubasis, but I wonder whether there are better approaches. I’ve used AUM for jamming, and it’s fun, but my tracks aren’t born from jams, and recording them in AUM and then importing to Cubasis sounds like an annoying extra step.
I don’t think Drambo can do multitrack audio recording which you can then edit on a timeline / arranger.
You can activate recording on each channel on the mixer but as far as I know that just makes a set of wavs. You’d need something else to edit/mix them.
I use my iPad with Drambo for live fx (send 4 channels from AH SQ5 via UMC404HD), midi sequencing stuff in the iPad and hardware, and as a sound module to sequence from my other brains (Force, Ableton, Cubase).
Definitely check out patchstorage for Drambo stuff - a great way to learn is to inspect other peoples creations and there are some great synths and effects ready to go mostly for free!
I like making soundscapes and textural stuff with the iPad. Some of the synths are amazing like Aparillo, Borderlands and SynthOne. Also like Drum Computer.
I record multitrack to Cubase or Ableton when that time comes.
Like the other poster said, I use Drambo for sequencing and arranging soft synths and midi sequencing external gear. I record the audio into my sp404 or koala, or Ableton if I plan on working on it further
You can record all the tracks simultaneously though, so they’re all in sync. Just drag into Logic Pro or whatever and you’re off.
(This answer is not aimed at you, @ThorntonForce, as I’m sure you know already. Just clarifying for non-Dramboids
)
FAC Drumkit is on sale, $8.99 US FAC Drumkit on the App Store
I noticed that Scaler 2 has a 30% discount as well ($12.99).
Not sure if it’s new (IAPs don’t show on most price tracking sites) but I’ve been looking to buy that for a while now.
And not strictly iOS, but FAC drumkit is now available on the Mac as an AUv3.
