Introducing Digitone II

Possible.
8 notes max per step on DN1 for 4 midi tracks max vs 16 midi tracks for DN2. 8x4 vs 4x16…

I quickly read NOTE EDIT menu but didn’t see max note limitations. Maybe 16 for audio tracks and 4 for midi tracks?

I don’t see a discrepancy. The unit can produce 16 voices of sound internally.

Each channel can play 4 MIDI notes on external devices.

Every time I think of springing for a Nord Drum 2…this covers that.

I hope TRACK LINK will make it to DTII as well for layering drums.

Digitone 1 was up to 8 note chords per midi track. If Digitone 2 is 4 note chords per midi track, then that feels like a downgrade if sequencing external poly synths? That’s also the same specs as DT 2, so I’m hopeful it’s just a typo in the manual carried over from DT2 manual.

Trying to figure this out to know if I should cancel my order or not. I use my DN1 as my poly sequencer, but don’t want to be limited to 4 note chords.

Looks super cool, and I’m especially impressed by the FM drum implementation, that’s gonna make some brilliant sounds in the right hands.

@LyingDalai, @ThomasJ or any DN2 owner may clarify this?

(@GhostTropic, there are potentially 16 midi tracks, and a secondary midi lfo, so it can increase midi data compared to DN1)

Congratulations to the elektron team.
I really like the sound of the piano preset here!!

To be honest, the moment I saw that Digitone II was being released, my heart sank . . . a lot!

I’ve been so looking forward to the release of an all-in-one Elektron box that combines both sampling and synthesis in one well-designed unit. Now, I’m less convinced that Tonverk will ever see the light of day. After all, why on earth would Elektron release a groovebox that would undercut sales for their most recently released boxes?

That said, I do think something new is coming soon next year. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

I didn’t care for the piano sound. Too much like the old DX-7 piano patches.

Arp midi out?

Yeah. FX was a typo; I meant FM. For the overlap, I was just referring to the M8’s FM engines versus the Digitone II’s FM engines. I am not sure how similar (or overlapping) they are.

On the one-hand, the M8 has a powerful 4-op FM engine by itself; but you have to sacrifice multiple tracks for polyphony.

Digitone 2 being a polyphonic synth - or an additional 16 synth voices - is a far more appealing addition to me than 16 channels of monophonic sample playback (the M8 itself also being a pretty good monophonic sampler).

If I wanted a sampler to pair with the M8, it would probably be the Roland P6 or Teenage Engineering EP-133, as they both support polyphony (and are both portable).

But it really depends what kind of music you’re making and what role the hardware has to serve.
Roland’s S-1 is a popular companion for the M8 as well; but obviously quite different from an FM synth.

Just tried it, and it’s 16 notes per trig.

Technically I was able to put more than 16, but I’d wait for an official response regarding that.

And who would use 16 (or more) notes on a trig!

Even on midi tracks?
Can they trigger 16 notes?
Are midi tracks concerned by voices allocations, layers?
(I’d be surprised if so)

Hmmm. I don’t think that’s how this works. Maybe I’m misunderstanding but I think you mean track “triggers”? This was actually on the first digitone and is pretty sweet. You basically have one track trigger whatever sound is on another track. I like to have the kick drum trigger all the other tracks randomly to come up with weird ideas. This actually was first on the monomachine and was a great composition tool for some wild randomness.

The Wave Tone machine, I wish, would have encompassed the entire architecture of a new release. I keep dreaming of a wavetable elektron. I am however, really stoked to try noise into the comb filter on my DT II to see if I can get a pseudo piano.

Your snarky comment totally changed my mind, I’m ready to stop expecting anything now
