When I use a Wavetone machine, turn down the volume on Osc 2, change the wave type of oscillator 1 to a saw, and then hit a note over and over again, that note goes back and forth between two different tones; one sounds like a square wave and one sounds like a saw wave. Any ideas why this is, or if there is an explanation?
I attached a video that illustrates the issue and shows my settings…
Is it still not possible to have some visual representation of what the lfos or envelopes are doing? For example, seeing the envelope on the filters take effect. I am capable of using my ears, but would be really nice to have implemented.
Not sure if I should create a new thread on this first or just check here real quick. I’m new to Elektron and my timing is good because I got a DTII couple months ago and should have a DNII in the mail on Monday. I see videos and links with the old DT/DN combo, but now with all these tracks?!?!? Which do you set up for master send and who rec?
Info on what I have
I have a 32ch mixer, should I just plug all audio outs for both E boxes to my mixer? I can also do return/sends back to the Elektron gear from my mixer. I’m sending PC aux sends to my DT II inputs for sampling of not only PC audio, but everything I have in that 32 channel mixer (Jupiter X , Korg Prolouge 16, Drumlouge, etc
The upwards morphing bass drone impressed me the most, so much grit, probably from the fold parameter and maybe post-filter overdrive, and that it’s just one track with one machine.
I guess the fold sound can‘t be replicated with OG DN/ST, but it should be possible to come close to the idea, even within single tracks or track + FX track plocks on the ST.
The examples in this thread already motivated me to go harsher with the OT, filter -> LOFI to roughen the edges, seems obvious and many have shown it screaming before, but I usually sticked to the softer LOFI -> filter.
The most fun I had with the OG DN was when squeezing wild rhythms out of single tracks with plocks on everything.
Anyways, thanks for the inspirations @Eaves and everybody else in this thread, enjoying the enthusiastic vibes.
I encountered a similar problem during the tests. It was related to voice allocation.
This seems to be the same problem since the sound changes every 8 trig.
Go to the Voice menu
Check if the sound is different when the track is using the voices of the second line
Then, check « reuse » on, and verify that the sounds stays the same.
Check you got the last firmware installed then please report to Elektron
This is so much fun, and so deep. Ironically I’m finding the FM tone machine is one that’s grabbed me the least currently. FM drum and Wavetone especially are bags of fun. I don’t think this can be really thought of as a 16 track version of the original, it’s a huge step change from that in my opinion with the extra machines and filters.
Been playing around this morning with a single Wavetone machine and sticking unison on so it uses all 16 voices with maximum detune, ridiculous fun
I can’t say I am having fun because of bugs…I hope next firmware will solve them soon.
I had a few freezes (standalone, once with only 1 track) and several voices allocations problems.
The other aspect on my version is the Comb+ filter, whose feedback is modulated by one of the LFOs. I don’t have an OG DN, so can’t help you with how to try and recreate it there.
I’ve had My Digitone II for a few days now, although only a few hours play with it.
My initial response was a bit muted, I felt like I didn’t like the basic sound of the box. I had a similar response to the OG Digitone. Different synths have different tone, that’s OK. I wasn’t expecting a Moog. I wasn’t sure about the FM drum sounds, I somehow couldn’t get kicks I liked and it all sounded a bit “flappy” and soft. Clearly very flexible though.
I think my mistake (not the first time I’ve made it) was to twist the knobs a lot and then just end up with all kinds of weird unusable sounds because the parameters affect the sound quite a lot (welcome to FM). I then remembered that subtle application of the wavefolder and feedback, small tweaks to the sweep depth etc yields better results. I think @DaveMech said it in one of his videos but you need to make small adjustments if you want to learn what the effect will be, learn what the engines can do and how to find the sweet spots etc. Pretty bloody obvious, I’m just impatient.
The increased track count and the ability to have enough different sounds on different tracks (build a drum kit) with enough spare tracks for bass/lead/chords/Pads/extra is a godsend. It’s much more capable as a standalone groovebox as a result, which is exactly what I wanted.
I also found that I was able to get some good drum mileage out of the Wavetone machine with modulated pitch sweeps, filter sweeps etc. You can get some quite DFAM-like sounds.
I have a horrible habit of overreacting to spending this sort of money and sending things straight back. I’m trying hard (against my own stupid nature) to be patient and take time to properly learn this thing. I love all the classic Elektron sequencer stuff and the extra track count removes 90% of the annoyances I had with the original. I haven’t even touched the Euclidean sequencing yet, I’m sure that’l be fun.
One last brain fart - it’s good to accept what a device is good at and what it isn’t. This box will never be a more powerful synth than my VSTs and my DAW and that’s OK. It fills a different gap, and I can use the groovebox workflow for what it’s good at and then use the computer to add some gloss afterwards if I feel like it. I ran the USB stereo audio straight into my DAW and through a multi-band compressor and it immediately added a lot of “oomph”. A bit of end-of-chain processing can works wonders.
It has definitely put on hold any thoughts I had about buying a virtual analog polysynth, that’s for sure. I’m hearing sounds from the wavetone and swarmer machines that can seriously give most hardware VA synths a run for their money.
The only thing that’s holding me back right now is the lack of Overbridge. I run a hybrid setup based around Live 12.1 with a Push 3 and I need Overbridge to integrate the DN2 into my rig.
I am still struggling to fully realize this box. I never thought that any device could replace the Digitone for me.
… a dream has come true that i never dared to dream of.
Big thanks to Andertons in the UK. I ordered my DNII at about 6pm yesterday and it arrived this morning at 10am … on a Sunday !!
Looking forward to putting my old DN backup on it and droning away
