Introducing Digitakt

So I stopped messing around with midi and made my first track today. I absolutely love this thing. So much better than I had hoped for, bugs and all. With a few updates, this is going to be a classic machine for sure.

I have seen all the videos and everything, but i cant understand one thing…
When you sequence external gear via midi ,can you control whatever parameter of the synth-drum machine-vst or whatever you are controlling, with the Digitakt sequencer and parameter lock it or just specific parameters?

sounds like some kind of transient shaping going on with the DT…

(apologies if these links have been posted before)

Sound pretty much the same to me, to my tired old tinnitus ears.

has @Callofthevoid heard this yet? He was thinking DT sounded a bit different.
DT has maybe more mid range definition, but barely if at all.

Yeah DT sounds slightly more ā€˜open’ and transparent to me but only listened on phone speakers…so no idea really  Seems there’s definitely an audible difference to most people tho. I like lo-fi, mids-heavy production so I never had issue with the OT sound. I can see how others might prefer things more transparent tho.

Maybe (maybe) this is the week we in Australia get our ā€˜pre-orders’ that we paid for weeks ago?!?!

Bugs aside. DT’s pretty sick!

Looks like no, as there is no CTRL ALL MIDI CC# in the Appendix A of the manual.

Do you have SETTINGS > MIDI CONFIG > PORT CONFIG > INPUT FROM set to something other than ā€œUSBā€?

bingo. it wasnt configured for the digitakt.

Massive!

I listened to these on the Genelecs in the studio and for sure the DT is crisper sounding on the percussive elements, but on the longer less snappy samples, it was nearly identical. The D/A is just a bit snappier sounding to me.

After I’ve had a few more days with the DT now, as far as its sound qualities compared to the Octatrack goes, I’d say they’re insignificant. You’re not gonna care either way, if you have them both or considering one before the other. A one-beside-the-other might yield differences. But they won’t matter, when it comes to putting together a great track. Not in the long run.

However, on the topic of sound, one feature that I’m really starting to miss, is the Octatrack’s master track. I frequently used the Octa’s compressor and EQ or filter on the master track, and they contributed a lot to what I think is a very characteristic sound that’s unique for the Octatrack.

I wasn’t expecting the DT to have anything of the sorts, despite the lure of the Master button on the instrument, but I’m being made aware of how much I’m missing it. While the DT sounds great, it begs for the kind of simple mastering options that the Rytm and Octa both have, in their own versions. This, I’d say, is a factor anyone who’s considering one or the other, should take into consideration. It makes a difference for anyone who enjoys sticking to hardware and keeping it slim.

If Elektron’s not working on this for a software update - which is fine - then they’re certainly setting the stage for a singular, focused mastering hardware device, a version of the Heat but focused on specific mastering duties.
