Introducing Digitakt

A few questions (sorry if I’m not using the correct terminology since this would be my first Elektron product)

1. There is no slice function, but the videos look like you can do different sample start and end points per step in a track. So, instead of slicing a drum break into separate samples, could I have say a single 10 second drum break/loop that plays different parts (different start/end points) of the break on each step. If so that would not only save on memory, but make it easier to organize samples on the 1Gb drive (i.e. no need for 10 individual slices, just one 10sec loop).

2. Some people have mentioned a workaround for time stretch using sample start time and LFO(?). Could someone explain how this works? If it’s complicated, I guess I will look for an iPhone app that can time stretch/pitch shift/chop to process my samples before sampling into the Digitakt (anyone have any app recommendations?)

3. For midi sequencing external gear, will it have all the same trig conditions, etc. For example, if I am sequencing an external sampler, can I do conditional trigs, etc? I have an old grimy Yamaha sampler that sounds great, but has no real sequencer. I’m hoping to make better use of that with the Digitakt.

In the faq its written that midi tracks also include trigger conditions.

Not sure if this has been done already but here it is anyway. This method requires a little bit of set up, but should hopefully work for everyone. Settings vary depending on whether you use a 1,2 or 4 bar loop, and on the tempo stability of the original loop. I would recommend getting your original loop as clean as possible (in regards to your chopping/zero crossing etc). This might get revised as I play around with it somewhat. In this example I’ll use a four bar loop of the Amen Break I do…

I think the next video of the Digitakt will announce an official release date. I had a dream the guy from AskAudio was asking Cenk “So when are these going to be available?” And Cenk says “Right now, you can find a Digitakt at your local shops, we released them yesterday!”

The buttons were all in terrible places from an interface perspective, some of the knobs had holes in them, and there was writing on it noting that it was running “OS v. 2.71.” I wondered in my dream if I had been sent a prototype by mistake as it was a bit beat up.

Dont know, I fully expect the date to change any day but it still says that its expected to ship the 15th. So hopefully this time next week we’ll know for sure…

So if you gotta choose between the Digitakt and Twin Peaks Season 3, and the one would exclude the other - if you get a Digi, you can never watch Twin Peaks Season 3 and if you watch Twin Peaks Season 3, you’ll never get a Digi.

What would you choose?
