another fine recommendation! Massive kicks and great snares, claps + percussion.
4 tracks ain’t so bad thanks to the dual filter and sound locks.
Rytm edges is out mostly thanks to the master processing and sample capabilities, but I find A4 percussion synthesis deeper overall.
TR machines, and well, just about any analog drum machine always require a bit of processing to get sounding good in a tune. The great thing about the Rytm is much of the processing is built in.
Can’t remember, it was in a BeatPeoplePodcast. He even took a prototype out but did not show it, probably not analog though, more a Linnstrument for drums I reckon.
I really would fancy a real drumkit, just Kick, Snare & Hat is enough. + space + no neighbours!
Honestly for the price it’s near impossible to beat the sound and functionality of the Analog Rytm MK1. Grab a used model off eBay - considering the potential the unit has for analog sounds, sample integration and sequencer manipulation it’s incredible value for money. Unless you don’t like the sound, which is a fair point, in which case the Tanzbär has to be the next logical choice. It’s less for more, but might be more what you’re after. Beyond that, the Arturia Drumbrute Impact is great but rather limited. The original Arturia Drumbrute is surprisingly versatile but only really shines with external processing.
EDIT: Or just embrace pure samples with the Digitakt… But doesn’t sound like you’re wanting to go down that road just yet.
Fair assessment, I like the drm for the range of sound design and I think its use resonates with processing. Kick drums on the mfb tanz2 hit so much deeper but it is buried behind a cumbersome sequencer I can’t jive with. Drm is certainly no hi hat machine though! Division department has that covered :c)
But if you sample and layer beats as you go, it’s hard to argue against the DFAM. Super capable on its own, and adding just a little bit of CV control (i.e. A4 or modules) you can get super experimental with it.
I agree with the A4 being a bad ass analog drum machine. I have both the A4 and AR. Both have their own style, but really a lot of the time the A4 just kills. The bass drums I’ve gotten out of it shake a soundsystem. The fm hihats (or any hihat) seem to have endless sound possibilities (did I mention multimode with 128 drum presets mapped across your keyboard?). It’s a beast. The AR has a sampler and a p-lockable dirty ass compressor/distortion…and using the sampler with the analog filters…into said dirty compressor is really how I use it. Very good filters. The analog voices just kinda add sub in the end.
As @AdamJay said, a strictly analog drum synth is super limiting. The one I clicked with was the tr-606 for it’s simplicity and grit. The rest I’ve tried were cool for a minute, like a week, and then the limitations just made me loose interest.
In the end, as a drum machine, i prefer the OT. Anything else and I get stuck, and think “why can’t I do this…the OT”…then I just bounce it to a thru track and fuck it up. For analog drum synthesis A4. For bangin, face melting driving techno, I grab the AR and sample into the OT.
My OT is quite happy.
I guess I’d need more detail on what you want from an analog box. each has their pluses and minuses, obviously. but here’s some general thoughts:
the great thing about the classic TR’s, the boutiques and things like the Acidlab machines are the simplicity and immediacy. as @AdamJay mentioned though, you have to love the core sound because there’s not a TON you can do with it.
I’d steer clear of Jomox in general, just because they’re buggy, the UI is garbage and their customer service is shit (IF you get a reply, you get attitude along with it). if you’re going to sequence it from something else, then maybe. they do sound great in a “funky” sort of way, if that makes sense…?
I kind of put Vermona DRM1, RYTM and Tempest into the same category of more pure analog, that you can adapt as needed; and of course, some more/in different ways than others. RYTM kills here for the ability to also put samples through the VCA/distortion/compressor.
not a huge fan of MFB stuff as it’s flimsy/made poorly and I’ve had noise issues with the couple I’ve had. I don’t trust them to last and I’ve heard customer service is shit.
Syncussion and Division Department if you want some wild zipp zapp sounds along with tune-ability to basics.
eurorack modular…?
I like combining a bunch of different drum machines, honestly; more unique sound that way. so maybe in the end the OT is the best approach. but it’s not analog
I’m also of the opinion that if a drum machine is too limited in its sound shaping possibilities and also the character of its sound, I’ll eventually grow tired of it and sell it and for that reason I ended up with buying the A4 when I was in the market for a drum machine and I really like it for that purpose.
The Motas-6 recently got an update that turns it into an absolute beast of a drum machine and I think it’s actually now taken 1st place as my choice drum machine. There’s just so many cool tricks that’re possible with it, I end up designing a new drum kit with it every time I start a new track / jam as it’s so much fun when you can get such dramatically different results from it. It’s maybe outside your budget but it’d be worth keeping in mind that buying a synth that can double as a drum machine opens up a lot more possibilities.
If you or anyone else is interested, I’ve made a bunch of demos recently which can be found on my soundcloud which I’m happy to link if anyone wants it but you can also find them in the Motas-6 thread here on elektronauts.
He is, but the “LinnDrum 2” as it were will be purely sample-based, not analog; with an expressive interface akin to the LinnStrument, only with bigger pads.
Maybe try some cheaper boxes instead of 1 expensive box ?
Korg modular drum ? / korg kick.
Mob 501 (808 style small box )
Korg er1 ( maybe not analogue but for doing electro it’s very good )
But mostly I’d also go rytm mk1 , it’ll do so much more than drums , I’ve got some bizarre basslines out of it too.
It’s also got presets , midi cc etc … I’ve had lots of analogue boxes but I usually end up sampling instrument variants and processing ready for octatrack / digitakt etc.
You probably know in your heart which one you’re really after. Save a bit longer if you have to, but get the one you want. It’ll save you the trouble of buying and selling lesser options and you’ll appreciate it even more once you get it.
I say Tempest, it has the best sound design options, but limited to 6 channels, and the memory and the sequencer is not very good. But that sound design option - is just too good imho. The samples are so la la, but for the occacional transient they are ok. Buy a used one.
I am overwhelmed at all the advices, recommendations and the likes.
THANK YOU ALL.
Have a DT which I use mainly as MIDI sequencer for my hardware. (Shame there is no ratchet in MIDI tracks, nor micro timing…).
Also have a TR-8 which I use as a basic guideline for my drum tracks. I actually quite like the kicks and Toms on it. Snare and hats are pretty poor in my opinion.
I have listened to a lot of demos onlne (Tempest, Tanzmaus, Tanzbar…). So far, Tanzmaus is the one that just clicks with me: go figure
A4… Not sure… Not convinced I would like to invest in it “just for drums”
Rytm… Do not like the sound of it.
Did not know/listen to Division nor acid box nor SpazeDrum. Will have to investigate
All in all, I like the “grain” (if that means something) of the Tanzmaus AGAIN
Edit: immediacy is NO factor by the way. The idea of layering with samples is a plus indeed.
Ha ha. Contrary for me. I chose the volvo( tanzbär) because of fear crashing in a tree ( ( autosave on pattern change) with the ferrrari ( rytm) and no need for concentration to turn on or off. I quite regret it. Also would have chosen the tanzmaus if it existed (size and sound). Also the tb reminds me too much of boring techhouse or whatever sound, rytm more of tresor sound ( was never there) or freetek ( faster with dirtier samples and performance effects. Nowadays rytm1 is cheap enough to be used 2* like they used 2* korg erm there)
I can not drive car btw. Also very nice n dirty electro is possible with tb and effects…
