Some presets by LFOstore, more on the aggressive side
Just snagged one of these new for $320. My goodness this thing sounds really big…gotta learn how to use it, but that won’t stop me from taking it to a gig tonight
Hi
Im just about to buy a S/H unit is it worth registering or not as its already registered to the previous owner so i can get firmware updates etc as ive read they charge to swap the registration over
Thanks
I just bought a used one and did the transfer process with the previous owner and did not get charged. I also read about having to pay to transfer, but I think it applies to the previous edition, not the X.
Oh great thanks
That reminds me. Need to register mine!
Can anyone tell me if the oscillator noise problem has been fixed? I tried to research but can’t see any firmware info without registering . Considering purchasing one of these. Any other issues you all care to share?
What do you mean?
If you mean the issue where oscillators can still be heard even when their volume is set to 0: no, the issue hasn’t been fixed yet.
Yet I wouldn’t worry too much about it; the volume is low enough that I wouldn’t have heard if I had not looked for it. Even now that I notice it, it doesn’t really bother me; its not an issue in most patches since they’d usually use all oscillators. In cases where I really want to use only a few oscillators and have some fairly ‘pure’ tone that would make the remaining oscillator(s) noticeable, I have some workarounds to silence them (e.g. set the oscillator you don’t want to hear to play two octaves lower on a square wave, then sync it to the first oscillator. This way it always resets before it gets to the second half of its waveform, which silences it).
Oh and on ‘other issues’: I didn’t run into any annoying bugs in my use. There are some limitations that bug me a little though, but you may or may not be bothered by them:
- There’s no ‘patch gain’ parameter or anything like it. The oscillator levels very significantly affect their sound as it seems they start (over)driving the filter past 80. To me, they’re one of the most important sound shaping tools. Yet it makes for a pretty fiddly workflow since there’s no patch gain setting to create some volume consistency between patches with low oscillator levels and those with high oscillator levels. You can use low levels of ‘drive’ to increase the level of a patch with low oscillator levels, but it’s fiddly workaround, especially if you’d also like to use the drive to shape the sound itself.
- You can’t change the envelop parameters with the mod matrix. I find this a real shame, since I love to play the synth with a keyboard and usually route velocity to some of the envelop times to make it more responsive / dynamic. Can’t do that with this synth.
- I would’ve loved to have access to multiple oscillator’s controls at once. It’s just so much easier to dial in a nice sound when you can change the wave shapes and levels of multiple oscillators at once – but they all use the same knobs on this one, so you end up swapping back and forth a lot.
Yes, or just set the silent osc to the same waveform, the same tuning and sync it to the other oscillator, so the only effect it has is a tiny bit of extra amplitude (which is practically inaudible), but not osc beating or other audible effects.
- Yes this is cumbersome indeed. You can however send midi cc7 to control the volume, which is a good enough workaround for me.
- You can select all oscillators at once and change the parameters of them all simultaneously. Not sure if that is what you mean, or you just want to be able to have access to all parameters of all oscs at the same time?
A few more things:
Bug: if the Uno Pro X is synced to an external midi clock, the synced delay times don’t sync correctly to the external clock, but sync to the (unused) internal clock that seems to be reset to a fixed amount (120 bpm or something). I have tried to change the internal bpm to match the external clock, but this doesn’t work.
A quirk: when you control the cutoff of filter 2 via the mod matrix (for example LFO to cutoff2), the filter Link feature doesn’t work anymore. Would be nice if they change this, bug it is not really a big deal. However, it was very confusing, because this is not documented and just seemed like the Link feature randomly stopped working.
Thanks for the MIDI CC tip! That’s pretty neat .
As for the access to oscillator parameters: I like to combine different waveforms to shape my sounds, playing around until I get something that sounds good to me. So it’s specifically to set each oscillator to something slightly different. Obviously is possible here, just takes some extra button presses so I end up doing it less than I probably should.
Oh wow, that delay sync bug is awful! I often run at or around 120 bpm so haven’t noticed, but this’d otherwise make the synced delay quite useless. This is such an obvious bug that it really ought to be fixed .
Yeah my workaround is to sync the delay by ear instead…
Thanks for the thorough replies! That does seem relatively minor.
This delay issue could be a no go for me as internal fx are a big selling point for me in order to save space in my live rig. I’ll have to consider this. Thanks.
You can turn of the sync feature and then sync to the tempo by ear or by calculation (bpm -> milliseconds). You can find charts or online calculators for that. The only downside to this is that tempo changes won’t keep it in sync…
Whats the latest firmware version for it?
Thanks
I just picked on up from Amazon UK for under £300 (warehouse, says as new just damaged box.), seemed like to good a price to pass on! Its going to be my MPC Live II Travel Buddy!
