A few of my tracks in this vibe will be released soon as an EP. I will make sure to post them here

I like both, but for me it’s Jamiroquai in this contest. However, I could pretty easily spin that this way or that way depending on the particular album or track.

Also, in the case of modern J, Matt Johnson is one of my favorite keyboardists full stop.

However, IMO, Hot Chip is better than both as a group/act. So bring in more of the Brits, and mix in Synth Pop. Or don’t, and we can get back to the French. I think there are too many locales in this thread now to do that though.

Classic french house sound of the 90ies, but quite recent…

Making Howard Hewitt - one of the best singers of his era - sound like a chipmunk, over a Rene & Angela?

I can see this comes from a DJ set and maybe OK in that context, but as a release, it makes me only pull out the original tracks to get to listen to them properly.

In the cold light of day a lot of tracks from this era make me feel like there was maybe too much lifting going on and we gave them a free pass on it.

It’s a fair point to an extent, for me disco samples were a gateway to the originals - at the time of that story I didn’t even know who René and Angela or Howard Hewitt were. Within a couple of years I was playing as much disco and soul as house music. But you’ve got to start somewhere.

There’s a few I still rate, but mostly they just bring back happy memories. I probably haven’t listened to 900 Degrees more than a couple of times in the past 15 years, even though I still have the 12".

But the thing about the filter disco cut ups is that … they really work in context. There’s a big difference between what goes over in your living room and in a club with a few hundred hyped up kids and a big system.

And even so, I don’t think it’s fair in most of the cases posted here to say that they’re just straight lifts, although there was also obviously a lot of dreck as well, just like with any style that gets popular. For me, there’s very much an art to the ruthless efficiency of identifying a groove, making it work with drums and other elements, and creating enough interest to sustain a dance floor for 5-10 minutes. If you’ve ever tried to do it, you’ll know that it’s not as easy as it seems.

Unlike a lot of the disco edits that dominated the era that followed, which were basically just putting someone else’s track in Sound Forge, rearranging a few sections, maybe a couple of loops at a push, then putting your name on it.

Also, fwiw for extra extra functional dance floor value, it was actually the Junior Sanchez mix of 900 Degrees that myself and the other guy were lining up. Still makes me smile to think of it.

oh! can’t believe i haven’t seen this thread before! i usually produce in a variety of genres but early 2000s french house is a big big influence on my house tracks (also an era I yearn a lot! lots of positivity, or i’m slightly biased because of nostalgia since i remember everything was chill and the world was a much better place back then)

here are some of my tracks that are basically love letters to this era:

One of my favorite tracks of the 2000s irrespective of genre, full stop. I have especially fond memories of it, since “Alcachofa” was one of the albums that got me into house and techno about 20 years ago. And this is my favorite track from the album. Perfect track for closing a set (if I should ever get to DJ in front of a crowd again, haha).

Mine too, but it’s too early to consider this sound as retro revival, we’re still stuck into 80/90 for that. I’m sure the french house will be the next retro sound for 2030s

Physical manifestation of this playlist:

I just noticed that Metro Area has not been mentioned here again, from NYC rather than France, but one of the absolute pinnacles of early 2000s house. The entire album is all-killer-no-filler, but I’ll just post two particular favorites of mine.

And to come back to french music: I just revisited the legendary Daft Punk set from Coachella 2006. Still amazing.
