Haven’t heard this one for a while!! I used to DJ for few years as well - such an amazing thing to say - class 🫶 Recently I stumbled on Mr. Pooley’s Instagram - love all the gear he owns, but clips with the 3000 are the best!
French house is for me more of a late 90s thing, never really dug the Ed Banger era which always seemed a separate style or later outgrowth from the original music. Remember, there was that whole Electroclash period in between as well…
Nevertheless, here’s some bangers.
Also when Les Rhythmes Digitales first came out ‘Jacques le Cont’ (aka Stuart Price) would do interviews in Franglaise to try and ride the French house wave of the time… Quite funny.
or Bangalter’s Start Stop Mix of Roy Davis Jr.'s Rockshock
but most importantly, Daft Punks’s legendary Essential Mix from 1997. It’s mandatory listening folks, I did buy a bunch of records just because of that mix (though years later, only got into house and techno in the mid-2000s):
I love the loungier side of things, but probably have a thousand or more sets spanning all my favorite genres saved on YouTube now, so it takes a while to sort through them.
That “Book Club Radio” channel has a TON of this sort of thing. Ranging from jazzy, funky, disco-y, etc.
My personal favorites of the genre that would qualify have been mentioned throughout the thread like Cassius, Ian Pooley, Daft Punk, Etienne de Crecy, and one I’ll add, Alex Gopher:
This is the last song I made and it was an active genre exercise. My first attempt at French house or French touch if you like. I shared this one in another thread but honestly it belongs here moreso. I swear I won’t shares it no more, in any other topic.
It’s definitely a genre where minimalism is key but still quite a bit to it. Musically simple but technically layered in execution of all the effects and mixing.
