Awesome. I am usually a meticulous pre-ordering manual reader, demo watcher, and all that, but this one is from the heart somehow and I’ll figure it out when I get there.
@tapesky
I am the same in that regard (reading manuals and watching lots of YT tutorials while waiting 6 months to finally order…).
With the hydrasynth, the only times I opened the manual was to find out about some very specific settings.
Making patches on this synth has always been like a natural process. Everything is at hand.
Enjoy
My Hydrasynth Explorer arrived today. I’m already in love. I’ve been making some broken radio beats with a barely perceptible background melody trying to crack through. And this is just my first attempt at a patch from scratch. What a synth! (Though it took me ages to figure out the amp was tied to Env 2 by default
) The PolyAftertouch is a dream. I’ve only tried it on some presets with the default pressure settings and it’s so expressive!
@craig is back on Track, yeah!
I’d love to see Ashun‘s take on a sampler.
Try using it on other things, like with a Mutator, or a combination of things.
You also have Note Off Velocity to work with, something not output by the regular HS keys. Wish i could experiment with it.
That’s the dream
On a side note… I’ve given the hydrasynth another try and have a much different feeling toward it when listening now. I enjoy it. Pairs great with my modwave.
I just want to know whatever other things they are working on. I’ve promised to never bind myself to a non-disclosure again, but maybe for a sneak peek. No matter what i expect the ASM engineers are brewing up some cool outside-of-the-box ideas.
I know the conversation has moved on and this post was from two weeks ago but it doesn’t look like this little question of yours was answered.
“PM” is phase modulation which is what most synths that are described as “FM” (frequency modulation) are technically using as their fundamental engine type. If I remember correctly Yamaha went with the term fm over pm because they thought it sounded better and was close enough technically. All of the others that followed adopted Yamahas terminology since it was in the public consciousness as the DX was such a hit.
Actual frequency modulation is a thing too of course but it’s a little bit different.
There was also the relatively short lived (though excellent) PD (phase distortion) used in Casios CZ series which was vaguely similar.
I’d kill for a new CZ style synth. It was the best of them all.
Does anyone have the stock Aftertouch settings available? I was mucking around in there last night after a little too much wine and weed, and I’ve butchered my poor boy. I can’t seem to find myself back to the balance I had, but it was very close to default from what I remember
Just medium for everything. Not at my HS right now. So either it’s called medium or normal.
Are the Delay/Fade/Release all a 0ms?
Hmm, I seem to remember it being 32ms for some of them. But like you, I’ve messed with the defaults now
Me too. I’m a big fan of that company in general. I’m lucky enough to still have my trusty old cz5000 but I’d love to see them do an updated take on the old cz platform.
Anyone know how to activate the micro tunings in the System Setup menu? They all sound exactly the same to me like nothing’s working. I’ve left the Voice menu on Chromatic, so it’s not been overridden by that. Any ideas? The manual isn’t clear on this at all.
As far as i know there is nothing in the System Setup menu with any bearing.
I’m confused by you saying “*left the Voice menu on Chromatic” ??? You’ve got to set the Voice scale to a micro tuning scale for it to work so it can’t be on Chromatic. They’re way over at the far end, keep turning the dial. Pick one that is really different like 1/2 tone, or the one with 43 tones per octave or something.
Otherwise haven’t a clue why it’s not working for you.
Okay, I’m gonna give it a go now. Maybe the System menu is only for sending and receiving micro tunings and I misunderstood everything.
Edit: you’re totally right. The micro tunings are at the end of the Voice Scale menu rather than the System Setup menu. Thanks!
Roger that.
It’s nice that the HS permits you to add your own custom scale tunings.
Notes about micro tuned scales : Since you’re permitted more than 12 tones in a scale, octaves on a keyboard or in MIDI is not guaranteed to be octaves. This also has the effect of taking arpeggiator sequences and changing them all around.
