Hydrasynth from ASM

If a musical toaster didn’t play this I’d want my money back

I`m owning an Hydrasynth desktop since yesterday and so far it´s

Massive capabilities, great timbres from the deep OSC/Mutators, fast user interface, good built (but the candyshop colors on the pads and the big data wheel are def. not my cup of tea- but i guess its 2020 and trends are set...?!) Anyway, while exploring the new player in gang, some questions came which i collected for the support, but as here are so many ASM heads ill try here first

  • on the Desktop, how is the vibrato LFO engaged? In the Voice menu you can only adjust how much it is driven by a connceted modwheel/miidkeyboard. Is there any way to dial in virbato on the unit itself?
  • what is AnalogFL in the voice menu? the manual is quiet on this
  • when dial in the efx dry/wet the overall sound gets much lower. is it intended or a fault on balancing levels with the efx signal?
  • delays which are clocked by usb midi, are getting out of snyc and back in after a while during jamming, the clock is stable from erm Multiclock, but once in a while the delays are howling like the tempo is shaken and the tape emulation pitches the delay.
  • sometimes a fresh connected modulation slot is doing nothing until the mod. source is stepped one up and back in the menu (e.g. changing from lfo1 to lfo2 and back to lfo1) then the modulation is doing its job. this inconsistency is not really reproducable and happens on all tried modulation connections. someone else noticed that?

so far, i have a fun night exploring the HS on the weekend.
woudl be great to have some feedback/thoughts on the above

all the best

I read the Vibrato is engaged via the Mod Wheel in the pdf manual page 64

Yes I had my Hydra desktop since yesterday, by far the easiest hardware synth to program IMO
Easy to reset mistakes via the “Shift” button. It’s my fav synth only after 1 day. Makes for a good light show too lol.

Only 1 problem I have as I mentioned earlier.

When you change patches there is a click and FX cut dead. I’d like smoother transitions as I’ll be using midi cc’s to change patches in sets and I’d be pretty pissed if it does this.

Overall 11/10 for sound and ease of use :+1:

Analog Feel it’s in the manual.

It adds an analog sort of instability.

oops, just oversaw the AnalogFL part…sry
I did read the part on vibrato in the manual but this part refers on the key version. There is no other possibility to have a vibrato depth on the desktop version? (if so, feature request sent  )

My Hydra desktop arrived this morning but unfortunately it seems to have an issue with one of the pads. The note is held indefinitely after releasing the pad. The same pad seems to be very occasionally triggered when hitting one of the bottom row pads. Weird. Stranger still, the issue seemed to go away briefly after updating to 1.4 but is now back. Huge disappointment.

Sorry to hear this. Obviously contact your seller. They need to make good on this.
There is also support on the ASM web-site and i definitely would contact them as well, they can talk you through this and answer the questions you have.

I’ve not heard of this before.

Sounds like a manufacturing issue. i have no knowledge though on the specifics of the pads on the HSD.

Is there a calibration for the pads ? I don’t think so. On page 10 of the System Setup menu, is calibration for the Ribbon and Wheel, but that is only for the HSK, i don’t think there is an equivalent on the HSD. There is a settings page, for the Pads or Keyboard on page 3 of the System Setup, which may change things, but it still sounds like you have a problem. That lets you change the velocity curves for the pads.

There’s a chance that this might be a break-in issue, ASM support can tell you this, that it will go away after you use it for a while – hopefully it is.

Could just be a sticky, or misaligned pad. It might settle after a good bit of use. Maybe try pressing down on each pad and wiggling your finger while doing so to bed the pads/contacts.

I sold my Supernova II KB about 10 years ago, and still regret it to this day. Keep getting tempted when they come up on ebay, but the prices are usually nuts.

Would anyone be down for contributing to a group patch bank? I’ve wanted to create a full bank for a while, but finding the time to create 128 patches with macros etc that I feel are worthy of sharing hasn’t been realistic, but I’d love to contribute 5 to 10 patches.

I’m sure between us we could knock out a bank or two.

Good idea :+1: I’ll probably wait a while until I’ve mastered this synth inside out until I start doing serious sound design. There’s a few features I’m still figuring out with my desktop.
Currently in the manual seeing if it allows me to programme my own phrases in the ARP I know it has about 61 factory patterns but I wanna do my own.

Just assigned a Macro (LFO) to try and scan the phrases/patterns - see if I get good results.

Save you the looking – there is no way to edit the phrases (YET). There are 64 of them. I’ve put the phrase selection on an expression pedal, but getting exact with that, say i want phrase 27, is the problem.

I keep hope alive that there will be a computer based phrase editor. My hunch is that making phrases is probably a little involved.

I’ve also been meaning to get something like this:

and programing it to send out MIDI CC so i’d have a button for every phrase. The NeoTrellis would be useful for a lot of things as well. If you could sequence phrases, that would be musically useful too.

But recently i’ve also been using the phrase feature less, as i find other ways to do things.

I just discovered these two videos done by “Snig Fargle” (never heard of 'im). Both well done spacey ambient pieces, i think both are solo one takes.

this vids got me worked up again :grimacing:

I was going to pull the trigger on a desktop unit to be externally sequenced. I then looked at the midi implementation, It’s 99% NRPN! It makes sense, how else would you give an external sequencer total control?

But, If you want to make instrument definitions for something like the Cirklon or the Pyramid, you’re SOoL. (How would you do this with an Elektron Sequencer?) I guess its time to put in a feature request over at Sequentix!

http://www.mecldata.com/download/asm/Hydrasynth_MIDI_Implementation_Spec%20v1.4.pdf

All MIDI CC messages are available as modulation sources. See page 75 of the Hydrasynth manual.

If you want to send NRPNs to the Hydrasynth from Pyramid or an Elektron, just program the four required CC messages to be sent one after the other.

Cirklon’s Aux rows in P3 patterns can send NRPN messages.

Ah crap I hadn’t checked this before I bought Hydra this is a bummer indeed. I was hoping to control my Hydra desktop from my Akai MPC X but Iv’e just watched a part of this video below.

NRPN

The guy says he uses a Beatstep Pro connected to his MPCX to deal with the NRPN’s… Why no Midi CC on the Hydra I don’t understand? I’m gonna have to find a work round here or tweak the Hydra live.

Read page 75 of its manual.

Yes it’s just certain parameters tho Iv’e seen this:

[3] MIDI CC #: Incoming MIDI data can modulate certain parameters, and they can return the favor.

Never mind I’ll get by :+1:
