How do you deal with making music you dislike?

Yo!

Has anybody ever had the problem that the music you make was too cheesy? My last few tracks are always going into a weird direction I don’t like. Maybe my destiny is to compose for soap operas?

Any clues how to make more testosterone driven bad ass music?

Examples of cheesy ?

I just embrace it.

So many anecdotes about novelists, songwriters, and other creatives having to put out tons of trash (in their opinion) before they can produce their watershed works.

Honestly, I think about 80% of the music I make is shit.

I stopped worrying about it, my taste really can’t be trusted

Start a side-project.

I have tons of tracks you’d consider cheesy then. :joy:

I think your example would be fine with chords that are a bit less predictible. But anyway that was not your question… My way to deal with making music I dislike is by not releasing it. I go full-on Marie Kondo: Does it bring joy or not ? If not, to the trash.

Also like it has been said, have a side project where you allow yourself to go in other directions. I have another project that is less personal but also more testosterone driven. It allows me to try techniques I could not apply on my shampoo-commercials-tunes.

Try to do the opposite of what you are used to, use distortion, go wild with the tempo, try cross-modulation… just push it a little more !

I enjoy everything I make, sadly I think I’m on my own

Well, like a popstar once said: “poor is the man whose pleasure depends on the permission of another”

I’m not going to lie, whenever someone praises my music, a little bit of me loses respect for them.

Turns out I’m really good at projecting my imposter syndrome.

hmh yeah, I think you are right. New thread or a tiny hint how to make them less predictable?

I always have issues with my songs probably like most here, I haven’t yet made a song im 100% happy with.

Having said that I like them all and could listen to them again after a while and enjoy them. Sure things could always be improved but that is the name of the game - its a journey.

But I do think you need to enjoy the process and enjoy your output.

If Im not feeling a track the sequencing data gets deleted but with an added bonus that Ive probably got a range of sounds that fit together and start again from the beginning. So like a semi reset. More often than not I get a far better result.

If all else fails, I scrap it. If I don’t like it, I couldn’t expect anyone else too, so whats the point.

I use Torso T-1, turn buttons until it sounds nice :joy:

I wouldn’t say cheesy but it’s not exactly testosterone fuelled coke party music. You just need to think about sound selection, also don’t know how clued up you are on music theory so excuse me if im wrong but it seems like quite a predictable pop type chord progression. Might be best to look a little into some more music theory. An artist doesn’t paint in pastel colours then wonder why it looks mellow. I found I had this problem when just going in with no intention. If you want to make hype start off with the right tools, aggressive in your face sounds, up the tempo. Hype music could be anything from high tempo trap to slow moving ominous clanging industrial techno. It really depends how you want to approach it, but if you start with a mellow tempo, a major chord progression and a mellow female vocal and a chilled out sounding drummer then the results will reflect that

That was a general comment about how words are used these days. I wasn’t pointing at your music in particular cause I know your music is shit.

Please respect me again.

If I dont like something I made, I delete it. And move on.

What’s your intention with your music?
Know that, and be present with it, then your music will follow. Want to make testosterone tunes (what ever that is) do it. Want to make cheesy tv music, do it. Be honest with yourself. Enjoy doing what you do. The most important bit.

Same here, no point otherwise.
