How do you deal with making music you dislike?

You are so right. That music just creates itself … that’s autopilot music if you know what I mean.

I guess I have to start differently … and don’t use cheesy and predictable chord progressions on my way out.

Keep going, don’t stop. Take time to reflect, if there is a particular moment you dont like, try to figure out what about it you don’t like.

I like to set goals for myself- ‘make an atrocious sound’ or ‘just use one instrument’ or ‘make a 30 second song’ to get different results than what might usually happen if I make five tracks in a row without pause.

The answer is never ‘more gear’ first, at least for me, it’s ‘change something about what you are doing’

This saying has always stuck with me, “Kill your darlings.” Meaning if you make a song you don’t like, just delete it or throw it in a random folder. I have a project I’m about to release soon, it was supposed to be 13 Tracks that I’d chosen. I wasn’t extremely happy with 4 of the songs, so I narrowed the project down to 9 total tracks. I dumped the throwaways in a folder dubbed “Finished Tracks with No Home.”

You’re naturally going to make stuff you dislike, it’s learning how to be okay with that and moving on to the next piece which is important. Also, try not to compare your art to others as well. It’s made me feel like all my stuff is trash in the past, so I avoid that. Stay true to yourself and let your muse guide you, even into weird territory. @Octagonist has a great idea in having a side project for the throwaways with no home. I may do this myself! Moniker time!!!

I agree but I can also hear this going into Lynch territory - degrading the music elements over time and introducing eeriness while keeping the simple vocal melody repeated :blush:

When I’m not found of something I made, I usually record it on OT and punish it to glitches.

Or wash it in reverb, put it in the background and smash it with some dark distorted industrial techno. Nothing like contrasts.

Avoiding having each chord falling on beat can help. It can be okay if they do, but it often leads to a “plodding” feel if there isn’t some other element to counterpoint it/respond to it rhythmically.

Having some chords falling a 16th note or two before/after the on beat can help give things more interest and introduce a push/pull feel.

I think this would sound cool with drum-and-bass drums. then again, I have a bit of an obsession at the moment with a pop song that has jungle-ish drums.

Yes! I also thought of twin peaks while listening, glad I’m not the only one :grinning:
seems like it only needs a slight shift into the realm of the black lodge (not that I would know how to accomplish this musically, but the repetition of a simple element like the vocals already hints at it, like a broken record sort of).

EVERYONES music is cheesy to someone. Im pretty sure.

Ive noticed with some of my friends that dabble in songwriting, that they can’t actually distinguish enough between their own opinion and someone elses opinion of the music to make a move forwards or back.

Ive discovered that NO ONE is going to believe in me and what i do 100%. So even if others think i shouldnt, im gonna go ahead and believe in what im doing….

I just think some peoples judgy voice is too loud. And thats partly because we know some people are “better “ or more creative or quantitatively more likeable (my song got 2 thumbs up in the “sounds coming from my gear” whereas @michaelbolton got 1000 likes……

I think it’s not bad , but maybe you want to have more '‘live’'in your track maybe one ( or all :wink: with live record instrument ( vst hadware but with keyboard or controller )and record in long sample ( you can choose your track after ) , you can mute the drum arrangement too and replay the same thing in figerdrumming . ( Just to have human feeling )
I don’t know if you use just a pianoroll . Don’t take bad this advice , the musicality is here and i recognise me when you post this question :wink:

they compliment each other. theres things the ndrl does that the torso doesn’t. biggest thing is the midi lfos. so i havent gotten rid of my ndlr after i got a t-1
(although there is a 100 ways to do this, i’m lazy and just rather them in the box)

Yeah, similarly I LOVE grimy distorted nasty industrial techno.

But I’m always doing music to make myself happy, so soft, pleasant things may come out, it’s rarely as raw and aggro as I want. No matter how angry at the world I am.

Granted, looking back on the old Combichrist sorts of music that got my heart racing in the past, I do want less simplistic banging around. But I need to figure out how to DRIVE without falling back on distortion. (When it gets good, THEN the distortion gets “tastefully” applied.)
