Two battles ago we hung out in New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz. On this battle we will go up the Mississippi a bit to the birthplace of Country, Soul and Rock & Roll: Memphis, Tennessee
This battle will require 4 elements:
A sample from Sun Records from Stax Records, as many as you want but must at least have 1 sample from each label
A vocal chop from any Memphis born or based artist (so Aretha Franklin, Al Green etc are ok even though they didn’t record for Stax) Any rap used must be also be from a Memphis local.
A chopped and screwed section (half speed and trunk-rattling bass!)
Audio from Martin Luther King’s final speech (“I’ve been to the Mountaintop”) given in support of black sanitation workers on strike in Memphis on April 3, 1968. The next day he was murdered.
There’ a ton of music to choose from! Please just keep posting tracks, there’s no limit. Keep the thread bumping and share some gems that maybe went under the radar.
I don’t make hip hop and I don’t own any Elektron samplers but I’m not gonna pass up an opportunity to make a pro-union song with clips from Memphis. I only lived there for a couple years but it made a huge impression on me.
these beat battles are open to any music making device you own. Tbh, I never have won one with my Octatrack! I’ve only had luck when I use Ableton, I have even used just my phone and iOS apps before
Cant stop thinking about Stax subsidiary labels. Like Enterprise. Some classic Hayes there for example. Tighter challenge with just main stax but yeah just thinking about it.
Haha glad to be back thank you mate.
Shortly after my last posts about my laptop dying, I switched on my Digitakt and tracks 3 and 11 have stopped working and are unresponsive, so I had to sit and compose myself for a month or two
But I’ve got a new laptop now and I’m gonna be on Ableton for a bit.
