yoyo @malus_mons, whats up with the challenge?

Missed this one, but def gonna get back on the horse for the next one

Well I only got 1 track which is yours. I don’t think there’s much interest in doing these anymore to be honest. Wonder what others think? Time to retire the Hip Hop Battles? or change the format?

I’m planning to participate in future.

I’ve just been having a bit of a creative lull recently, but I’d hate to see this die.

Maybe the format needs a shake up?

I think the format should change, I really enjoyed the old ā€œBi-Weeklyā€ sampling briefs. just 2 weeks to mess around with one track, and it was cool when we were provided stems. Seems like these type of "battles’ work best with a dedicated host. The interest in the hip hop battles has certainly died down over the last year or so

You can see the challenge running with just a sample pack is getting loads of entries.

Perhaps people are afraid to be judged?

Perhaps, but also that thread is just basic groovebox song creation, its not really challenging just fun! Sampling for hip hop specifically requires intention and meaning, its serious business. There’s also a ton of history and culture that you can’t escape when making ā€œhip hopā€, which is a good thing!

Yes agreed.

That does limit engagement though. I often don’t participate because of the barrier to entry of my limited knowledge of the form when the challenge is more complex or requires understanding (for example) what the key differentiators between an East Coast and West Coast style would be and when I do I am often slightly embarrassed that my entries are somewhat outside of the genre because of my lack of skills.

im really motivated for further challenges, so please no retirement. ( :

Just some thoughts:
Maybe we could arrange on this forum to alternate between the Hiphop and the DnB (or other ā€˜big’) Battles.
DnB in may, HipHop in June etc.

I wonder if there would be interest in an Downtempo Battle. Or a Battle where the style is free.
I like Battles sampling certain artists / albums.

I sometimes find it hard when there are 4 rules or more.

As for me, I was motivated to participate, but I admit I found there were a bit too many rules. I’d need more free time to be able to do this kind of battle seriously. Just digging the right samples can be quite time-consuming.

Hence my idea to launch a more simple battle, but I didn’t intend to paralyze this one. Maybe I should have waited a bit…

I did finish a beat then when I read back to see when the deadline was i noticed the chopped & screwed section rule and had no idea what to do with that that sort of thing and abandoned ship.
My fault for not reading the rules properly.

Aww that would be such a shame, still love the format! Sometimes life just gets in the way. Sucks that you got only one entry this time though…

Also if this one gets an extension i’ll make one, that’s a threat not a promise

And to continue on the topic of motivation in general for these kinds of battles, for me personally it works best if my curiosity is triggered. So if parameters / rules are framed as ā€œwhat would it sound like if we ā€¦ā€ => mix doom with aphex and an 808, and then whatever comes out comes out. Just to mention a genius example someone came up with recently of that format.

As for the rules… idk guys, have you looked at what the battles used to be? It was all about the rules.

For example:

To me the whole point is to make a cohesive playlist.

Chopped and screwed is just half-time and pitched down.

Whatever you got send it to me!

I hope these don’t stop! Haven’t been able to participate in a while but really enjoyed listening to the last one and am planning to join again when I can.

It’s true that the rules of this one were a bit complicated. Not complicated to understand, but very structured.
And it was clearly a success, perhaps thanks to the fun theme.

Otherwise, it might just be a matter of timing. Maybe your battle launched a month later would have been a hit.

Hey y’all Im a 46 year old single dad of two young kids. I don’t have time to worry about this. Quite frankly, I don’t care very much whether this goes on or not. If you’ve been around for awhile then you would know these battles haven’t got much participation in the last 6 months or so. Nothing to do with rules or timing. This forum is about gear not genres, and the discourse over the last year has almost completely moved to gear and Tonverk speculations.

Diaba$e has a discord with weekly battles, I suggest trying that out.

So do whatever you want. This is getting annoying

I think people are trying to suggest ways in which participation could be improved rather than complaining about the way that the competition has been run.

Everyone who has helped, or participated with any of the challenges is awesome.

It’s literally the reason I know how to produce. Nothing else has ever got me regularly making tracks.

About 60% of all the electronic tracks I’ve ever made have been for challenges on this site.

I’m new here, so I can’t comment on the growth in battle participation.
My opinion on the complexity of the rules is entirely my own, and it’s actually more of a skill issue than a time issue for me. I’m not good enough (and therefore not fast enough) to participate in this type of battle at the moment.

Maybe later if I improve and these battles are still around.

I hope it continues, because listening to the playlists of the previous battles, I was quite impressed by the level of some and it is a real source of motivation.

Peace.
