I was wondering how Josh Wink’s “Higher State of Consciousness” vocal part that says “Hiiiggherr Staaateee of Cooonciioouuussness” could be done on the Octatrack or the Rytm…
If you were to record yourself say “Higher State of Consciousness” at a normal pace, what’s a good way to mangle the sample to get into the ballpark of the track? Sounds like a bit of echo and a bit of graininess.
(Sorry if this is Octatrack 101 - I don’t have one, I only have a Rytm).
Quick and dirty answer is slice it up and then use retrigs.
I can’t remember off the top of my head but you could possibly also use an lfo to move the “start” parameter to shift the point where the retrig starts (could save time vs lots of slicing).
Edit: this is for the OT. Same should apply for RYTM without the slicing of course
Ah. Yeah, I figured it would have something to do with the start param. Sorry… up until this point, I’ve only used samples for one shots and nothing fancy.
That particular time stretch sound is an artifact of rack samplers from the '90s. I’ve yet to hear a modern sampler that is lacking enough sophistication to pull off this sound perfectly. So there you go, I said it. The OT doesn’t sound shitty enough to do this.
Oh wow - good news! You’re welcome. Immediately after posting I had a slight since of regret due to the abandonware nature of the project, so I’m really happy it worked for you.
I don’t remeber that sample, but if you want to try some lofi time stretching you can do that on the octatrack. Set up fast trigs on a pattern and use lfo to modulate sample start. The faster you trig the sample the “better”. Use the amp envelope to shape the sound a little if needed. Can remove the worst clicks and artifacts.
I did this with the mono machine arp and a Yamaha A4000 back in the day. But modulated the sample start via midi cc.
Create a trig on 1, turn retrig on for that trig, set length to 16, rate to 1/32, velocity to -128.
Turn velocity up to 128 on the trig page
Tap FUNC+FLTR to access settings, turn off Velocity To Volume, enter Velocity Mod Setup page. Select Sample Start as the destination and set the depth to -120.
Go to the sample page and move the sample start point to 119.
