Happening: Midwest Octatrack Workshop

stoked! thanks again for setting this up!

My flight lands at 8pm and I’m staying at the Intercontinental Hotel. I believe it is relatively close to the spot. Anything going on tonight?

All kinds of stuff going on, here is a guide:

That Dead Man’s Carnival looks like it’d be fun, but I’ll be landing close to 11 PM. Probably best to rest up and hit that public market early Sat. morning to satisfy the food/drink requirement.

I thought I’d lost the 1/8"-1/4" plug adapter that came with my headphones, but I found it and now I’m back to being stoked again. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

wasn’t sure i could make it, but things worked out for tomorrow. early morning drive, here i come!

Got a reply from the hotel concierge. I should have known there’s a bus system, and it runs much later than DC’s. Otherwise I would have paid $30 for a taxi from airport to hotel.

Waiting on my flight. See you all tomorrow.

It’s cold up here.

Now, I don’t want to create any pressure for tomorrow but there is a door prize…

Many thanks to Allerian for a great workshop today. I think everybody in the room learned a few things and the vibe was great. Absolutely worth the trip up for this.

I will post some pictures later.

Really enjoyable. My favorite part turned out to be comparing OT navigation techniques. Can’t thank you all enough for coming up. :+1:

Thanks for putting this on Allerian. I learned a lot. It was invaluable to watch how things are done and have the opportunity to ask questions. Great location, great people, all around great experience. I left inspired to make some noise.

Thanks Allerian for putting this together and everyone for coming out! Felt really inspired by the techniques and approaches we discussed. Now to carve out some time to get cracking on this thing

Serious knowledge dropping happened this past Saturday. I hope I’ll be able to make sense of all my handwritten notes. :joy: I too was inspired and got some great ideas for re-working my workflow.

I will decorate my work cubicle with pride, using the prize I won. The ol’ cube could use some spicing up anyway.

Thanks to Allerian for hosting, and thanks to everyone in general for dropping knowledge. Afterwards, I went to Discovery World to mess with the Haken Continuum, hardware Lemurs, and the Reactable.

GovernorSilver, how did you find the Continuum? I’ve been interested in it for a while, but haven’t yet got my hands on one. Maybe I’ll go back to Milwaukee, now I know it’s there…

The continuum is simple amazing. One of the best if not the best controller I’ve ever touched. If you can afford it, get it.

It’s incredibly sensitive to your touch. It was set up with a patch that was great for evaluating the responsiveness. Greater velocity produced more percussive tones, higher Y position brought out more harmonics, and the volume swells with pressure was very responsive. Coming from a guitar and viola background, it was also very responsive to finger vibrato and slides, which to me always felt more natural than using standard pitch and mod wheels. I believe it’s a half-size model, but you get enough playing area to get a good feel for what it can do. And I think it’s one of the recent models, with the built-in sound engines for standalone operation.

It’s polyphonic (with mono mode) but would take quite a bit of practice to play chords in tune. Intonation in general has to be practiced. Traditional bowed instruments have conical necks so you can feel where a note might be, after practice. The Continuum surface doesn’t change in size with pitch so those black strips help a lot. It didn’t seem like the rounding feature (to round where your finger is to the nearest “correct” pitch) was activated. Another thing that has to be practiced is control over finger pressure - for example when I played chords, I found a tendency to press harder with my pinky than my thumb, so the pinky note was louder.

I do think it’d be worth a return trip to Milwaukee to try the Continuum, the two Lemurs, and Reactable at Discovery World. If you’re a biker/hiker there’s a nice trail that goes by it too. And next door at the art museum, the Kadinsky exhibition is scheduled to start in June.

Awesome, thanks for your impressions guys!

Oh I have a pic or two of the Continuum. Trying to decide where to post. Thought of Instagram and realized it’s for mobile phones - I took the pics with a regular camera, not my phone.

did someone say continuum? That thing makes me feel weak, both in the skill needed to play it as well as how humble the guy is who builds these in his basement.

off topic, this guy is a huge inspiration

Did you guys manage to get some video of the workshop? I want in on some of these workflow tips :imp:
