GR-MEGA from Tasty Chips

DHL to the USA is mind-numbingly fast; that’s my fave reason at least

They suggest you use DHL express for international orders - probably so it is more easily tracked and more efficient on delivery.

I’ll find out … my black one should be on its way to Australia this week

Shipped by TC via DHL to me in California, US on Monday 11/4. Received in perfect condition on Thursday 11/8!

Got a black one. It sounds amazing right out the gate and the firmware is quite mature. It looks great and the manifold physical controls with large screen easily justify it being slightly large—though it’s not really that big.

Fingers crossed for a Decksaver next year. (They make one for the GR-1, so it seems highly likely.)

Have you used the Spectral engine yet ?

If so i’d be interested to hear any thoughts you might have.

Just via the factory patches, but clearly the spectral engine stuff is powerful. In one mode, the display becomes a Metasynth-like “photo” where x=time, y=frequency and pixel brightness=volume, which allows for evolving microtonal constructs. This is the first time I’ve had a Metasynth-style process outside of a DAW-centric environment. If you’ve ever used MS the potential for design overlaps. Playback is smooth no matter how I’ve messed with the virtual playback head.

More later—again this is just from the first couple hours of sans-manual poking about.

I am actually talking to Custom Covers Ltd.

I have one for my Cirklon MK ll and they are very very nice.

Argh seeing this in the light of day is reigniting my lust… Stopped working to study, can’t afford this kind of insanity currently… Just makes it worse.

Any other mega-users willing to write a little bit about their experience so far?

…mmmmmm, tasty chips…

great sonic hw tools, truu…and their takes on audio mangeling beyond granular sounds amazing…
but i would not compare them to elektron devices, since their overall groovebox based music instrument take, no matter which sonic focus they individually offer, always ends up vastly different and way more universal than tasty chips approaches…

even this latest product can “only” do/add very special/dedicated things to ur music productions, while working with any elektron box, u can already cover all essential sonic ingredients an average tune/track must have…AND also adding some special secret sonic souce to it…

but hell yeah…when it comes to the tactile/haptic feel of working with it, besides elektrons klak klak zak zak, tasty chips does an equal great job…

Has anyone of you experienced crashes of the GR-Mega?
I got so upset after it happened three times in a row, that I safely put it back into the box and left it there for a couple of weeks.

Sounds very frustrating! Is there a forum or a Discord forTasty Chips feedback and user interactions?

Yesterday’s happy hour turned out in the worst first day exprience ever with a new synth/sampler. And I tought SP404mk2 was frustrating :see_no_evil:

What happened??

1 or 2 hardware issues, but mainly dissapointed in the sampling integration. That’s probably it’s worst feature.
I don’t want to be to negative about it though.
It’s the first day, so there are probably user errors involved, but otherwise some simple things are hard to do or aren’t implemented(at first glance and I did read the manual  ). For example you can’t delete a sample you’ve just recorded.
There are some (known)bugs and it is very menu divey.

I’ve send an email to Tasty Chips with an issue list and a few feature requests, but if I don’t get a better experience out of it in the coming days, it’s probably not for me.

I think if you have a huge sample library and you just load files in, it’s a really rewarding synth. But I want to live loop and mangle stuff I’ve made on my Elektron’s. Record phrases, make lush pads out of some Digitone melodies I’ve got, glitch up some beats and be able to put this in a live performance…I don’t see that happening for the moment.

To end with a positive note. Playing with the factory content is really fun and gets you in music territory I’ve never been able to get in before. For example there’s one patch that gives you instant Autechre Live vibes.

Oh, this is unfortunate, after the wait and the cost. I hope things turn around in the next few days, but if not, you have my sympathies. 'Tis better to have tried and failed…

Does anyone know if Tasty chips has said anything about lessons and learnings from GR-1 in a blog or video?

You can delete a sample in the file manager, no? For faster deleting, could you create a blank preset and load that?

Or if you have looping rec on you mangle in real time.

I haven’t used mine enough but I’ve loved sending my Prophet X through it. I get the workflow is kinda tedious, unintuitive and menu divey, but I kinda expected it from a boutique synth maker. The hard click buttons are kinda a sensory nightmare for me.

Interesting, I wouldn’t have thought with the large screen and tons of buttons and encoders it could be tedious …
