Wondering if anyone looks at all their stuff and feels shame!?
I just got back from a week away with just an OP-Z and returning to my large amount of elektron boxes and other gear I felt a bit ashamed of myself…

Well I don’t own as much gear as some people do so I can’t speak for that part of the populous, but I think that what I feel is fortunate as opposed to shameful. I’m blessed to own some gear even if it’s not all in constant use, so blessed might be the better word. it’s only shameful if the gear in question is ill gotten and if you’ve gotten it without theft or crime then it’s no worse than a guy who owns a bunch of expensive comics or something.
I use the example of comic books because a lot of them these days are sealed away in plastic so you can’t even read them if you wanted to, the cgc graded scam insures that your comic books don’t change condition after grading, but it also makes it impossible for you to even do what it’s meant to be done with which is read it.
literally in a block of plastic, useless for anything other than an investment. gear can be played with at any time you choose thankfully.
I looked in my studio recently and didn’t see any Behringer gear and felt pride.
Only when not using them enough.
Not a popular opinion I guess, but I think this shame is justified since this hording is rooted in hedonism. As a consequence those expenses directly limit the heritage to your next generation or at least limit endeavours to establish them in this world.
I‘m guilty myself.
ashamed in what way? that you have a lot of gear? or that you don’t use all of your gear? or that you don’t need all that gear to make music?
I feel more “gear insane”. When I look at my gear I think “Whoa, how did I think I can afford all this?! That’s insane!”.
Sell it all and buy a Rolex watch
Good question!
I think coming back from a week with just the opz which has 16 tracks and can sample and p lock and randomise etc I was hot with a feeling of shame at the lack of use, the expense and size of the home setup (which is ironically also my post with the most likes) and also maybe a bit of shame at not knowing how to use a lot of the boxes (OT) to their fullest extent - so a bit of all of it really. Plus I’m a therapist so have a propensity to examine my feelings deeply as a necessary way of walking the the talk and staying fresh for my clients
This made me think of norms dirty Johnny joke
oh man, these drawings - so timeless and you get a feeling of familiarity and well-being, for whatever reason.
Which joke and drawings?
yeah don’t get me started on comic books, I’m glad I found music in the 90’s because otherwise I might be one of those who can only look at the plastic…
Yeah, I bought a job lot of old smelly jazz records about three years ago to sample, I’ve sampled two records…argh!!! But they look nice
makes me feel connected to myself. sure i could sell it all and buy a whole new wardrobe, or a new car, but this is me and i love putting myself and others in trance states with it.
I have made my kids a kid sized setup consisting of a few volcas - so assuaged my guilt somewhat…
so you’re ashamed that you’ve got all that gear but you don’t know it deep enough, well that’s easy enough to solve, remove all your gear from your sight, put it in a closet or something, take one instrument out for a 2-4-as-much-as-needed weeks period and use only that, nothing else, you’ll know your gear much better and you can always put it back out of your sight or get rid of it if there’s no connection at all.
Yeah I get that, it might be about being connected to a feeling from that past (even a negative feeling) that helps connect with a younger free self and mitigate the sadness of loss and getting older
I look at my gear and think it’s more of a sham than a shame. Everyone needs a hobby I guess…
Indeed so true - the human mind is very complex
