Only a matter of time, really. Could be a bit hit and miss over the years (all those girls-with-synths covers from the 90s show their age now) but it’s always been interesting. Plus that classic first sample CD helped launch the careers of Andy C and Ant Miles.
Autechre pooing and flushing through some comb filtery delay is one of my top ten moments in electronic music history.
I have like a hundred or so. It at some point for me was a great way to learn tips and tricks, a great way to learn about gear and hear demos.
But…the internet…
Sad to see it go.
I am not sure if this is hijacking this thread but Muzik Magazine is available online for free. Massive collection with a lot of interesting content. I love the old ads…It’s like a time machine.
well, those covers were already 20 years out of touch by the 90s imho, it’s why i body-swerved all bar one issue which probably had a favourite artist or review or cd freebie i had to own …
Future Music! Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. I remember the CD that had Mouse on Mars, “Stereomisson”, opened my mind to a whole world of music.
I am kind of amazed that any print magazine still exists, let alone specialized ones.
In the '90’s, I learned a lot from Option magazine, but in my naïvete, I sent them money for a lifetime subscription, and about a year later, they folded without notice. At least it wasn’t that much money.
Yes, sound on sound still goes in print but has quickly adopted an on line pdf version etc and I subscribe to that now…save a tree or 2.
It is a huge bummer but also not surprising. I will really miss FM. I wrote a bunch of the producers’ guides, interviewed a lot of great producers and got to demo a lot of great gear. It will be missed.
Future Music is where I first heard of Elektron with the release of the SID Station, RIP to a real one (that I haven’t bought in 20 years) 🫡
So long FM, and thanks for all the (stolen) CD-ROMS!
In case anyone fancied loading up their sampler with some classic samples, you can check out the original Future Music Sample CD here - The Future Music CD Volume One : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
And yes, it’s audio, you’ll need to sample it, like what we used to have to do!
i used to buy it… i might have issue 1 somewhere… but the last decade or more magazines in general have died , i’m a little surprised it lasted so long.
i’ve tried ‘readily’ recently (magazine subscription service) …
i mostly read future music / retro vid game related mags / empire / electronic sound.
Bummer
used to love going to the news stand in the middle of the night for future music, computer music, mix, recording, keyboard, tape ops, remix, sound on sound and others
Well that’s a bummer, that was a cool magazine.
I guess now it’s ‘Past Music Magazine’.
God I loved magazines. Punk Planet and HeartattacCk were some of my favorites. I used to read FM at Borders because I couldn’t afford to buy it. I’d take notes.
Had a ‘demo of the month’ or whatever it was called in FM circa 2008ish, I think you were supposed to win some monitors but sadly I never heard anything after the issue went out. Used to love all the samples they’d include with the cover disc
This is how we did it before smartphones.
I mean it’s a bummer, but it’s more of a bummer in theory than in practice. It’s not as though I’ve been reading FM lately, but this is still an existential bummer as though a chapter of life is closing it’s doors and I wasn’t ready to accept it yet. But this is the herald of the times, or something.
I dunno, best luck to the future music guys on their journey to youtube or wherever the content may take them.
Brilliant. Also, retrograde congrats to you from 2008 before you found out they weren’t sending you the speakers!
Truly. I know I have access to almost any information I could want on this nightmare rectangle, but going to the bookstore to read about the new tech seamed so much more intentional. I could still do it, but who’s got the time?
