If I had a nice bookseller with a good zine section close by and hadn’t developed quite such a profound distaste for physical warm bodied people, then I’d probably still be willing to go add my fingerprints to rest of them’s what had laid hands on the shiny new photo cover magazine prints already.
My 2008-self thanks you! I’d post the track here but it’s regrettably cringe ![]()
you could find the paper copy print online and screen cap it though! that would be epic.
I might still have it lying around somewhere but if memory serves me correctly it includes a terrible photo of me and I’m not sure I want to post that here
edit: had a quick look where I thought it’d be and nope, long gone
Oh boy, what a day. I was already on the struggle bus, and now the tears are flowin’ like a leaky faucet. Guess when it rains, it pours, huh?
wow… Haven’t paid attention in years, but back in the day… loved Future Music mag. Damn, legends!
while I never had one of these in my hands, I thoroughly enjoyed the video @pokk made some time ago going through an old issue from 1994 (30 years, damn…), reminded me the times I was browsing these drooling on all kinds of instruments, computers and whatnot.
cool video
Sad but unsurprising news, I was on the very first cover mounted CD back in 1993 with a couple of tracks and some samples I contributed, it was quite a big deal to me as a youngster and led on to some opportunities I otherwise might not have had.
Thanks Future Music, the contribution to the early UK rave scene should not be underestimated, in those pre-internet days the magazine and the cover mounts were a lifeline for kids wanting to get started. RIP
Edit: The cover girls were commonplace on many mens and women interest magazines, I can’t be mad at them in hindsight, even though they were a bit naff - especially given the proliferation of IG, OF and other online content nowadays, all seems rather tame in comparison.
Guessing Computer Music will follow in due course. A shame really - was great to read through my Apple Mews sub. I was generally only really interested in the reviews and “top 10” lists.
I was rather sad to receive an email from the publishers of "Future Music’ today informing me that the next issue will be the last I will receive as the print version is ceasing publication. I have enjoyed reading it for a number of years since it provides a great mix of hardware and virtual equipment and articles showcasing musicians. The magazine was always a great source of inspiration (and GAS) and I looked forward to reading it every month. I still have “Computer Music” magazine to fall back on though - as the title implies - it only deals with a segment of my musical interest.
Though I realise that print magazines are a bit 20th century these days. I wonder what others are reading?
I’ve been reading Computer Music since issue 2 and still have it on subscription along with Sound On Sound. It’s a really shame out Future Music and I would still often pick up a copy if I saw it in a shop.
I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did but it’s still sad news nonetheless. My first real job was as a sub editor for Computer Music, so I spent a couple of years next to the FM guys and gals. As fun as it was working on things I actually cared about and trying new music software, I had to move on eventually. The main problem was really bad pay (because people accept low wages when it’s a creative industry?) and everyone had to make ends meet by freelancing for the other mags in the Future portfolio. Eventually that was too much stress, especially around print deadlines.
Saw this news and read the posts above. I now remember that one of my tunes made it to their CD. I think I sent them a tape and as I remember they asked for it on DAT or something. Somehow I deleted one of the midi tracks and couldn’t remember what I’d done and had to re do it.
Their reviews were pretty Pollyanna. All kinds of crap scored 4 or 5 stars. Clearly not that discerning, as otherwise my music wouldn’t have made it to the CD.
I still have all my FM and CM DVD/CDROMs. My duo, Radioactive Sandwich, had a track included on the disc one month. It was pretty friggin’ awesome.
Idea: for print magazines to stay in business, they can create YouTube channels where they post videos of the magazines being read
It’s sad but slightly unsurprising news. I’ll have to be honest though, I could never really get into Future Music. I have a Readly subscription, so do/did skim through it, but I’ve always preferred sound on sound for some reason.
My major concern for the future though, is that younger generations will only get, via targeted tech company algorithms, a very narrow band of feeds that double down on their interests. That is a great thing about newspapers and magazines, in that you get exposed to things outside of your comfort zone.
Thus plungeth the sister magazine as well (as some predicted here)
Hmmm, sad but unsurprising.
I would have given an arm for the software they give away today when I started with hardware in the early 90s. Like the FM sample CD, I’m sure many got their start or even produced a few hits with their software.
Oh definitely, you can go very far just off the back of what’s in those packs.
But oooh shiny, heheh
