I’ve gotten rid of mine twice, because I needed the money. Sooner or later a new one finds its way into my home. The last time I bought an extra cheap one with the headphone issue. This way it will be harder to sell it.

Ok so my mk1 arrived finally and I’m going to have a bit of time with it over the weekend sampling OP-Z
Oh my…I forgot what a p in a ot is…how do I save???
I’ve been reading the 59perlen article which really helped demystify the OT - following his route by starting to use it as a mixer and effects box for a4/md then slowly learn a new function etc etc
I think I can hear a difference in sound from the outputs compared to the other gear but it’s a bit more lofi is all I can say
i’ve gone through SO much gear in the past, the few pieces of gear that i’ve managed to hold onto for more than a couple of years has been the OT,DT,DN, and the odd Korg Minilouge XD i have hear admittingly collecting a bit of dust lol. i’ve also recently gotten the SP404MKII and to be honest, the few times i have sat down with it alone i did enjoy.
haven’t managed to actually create anything worth a damn with it yet but i feel like i might still want to hold onto it for a while longer. the work flow is definitely NOTHING to compare to the elektron box’s, but for spur of the moment inspiration with samples it’s MUCH better than say any of the overpriced, limited offerings that TE has offered… cough cough* OP1 and field.
as one of the replies above sugjested i would try messing around with the example project first, no commitmants, no pressure, just jam about and mess shit up. then i would try perhaps using it as a dedicated mixer/effects box in the likes of Ezbot.
that man is seriously the main reasons for me not having sold any of my elektron gear off over the years!
Yes I totally agree re ezbot, I’ve booked a couple of tutorials with him and it’s really given me the confidence to move forward with ot
With a4 and md into ot I think that might be ot for a while, rytm is back on reverb and all the volcas in a cupboard. Still hanging onto OP-Z for trips but I’ve not used the sampling on it yet so can’t vouch for it
A4 and MD sound like music to me so with OT currently as a mixer effects box and a few more lessons with ezbot I reckon I’ll be mangling loops and hopefully generating a playable set for some sort of show next year
Well….that was hopeful in retrospect I cannot use the octatrack beyond the mixer and effects and scenes which is great for master mixing a track - not yet got into sampling or anything that involves recording so here’s a track put through the ot using fx scenes compress and add interest
Fantastic track! It has vibes reminiscent of the avant-garde IDM from the early to mid-'90s.

I’ve considered booking with ezbot, but currently, I don’t think I’d have the time or the mental focus to fully benefit from it. So, for now, I’m content with just playing around during the weekends and in those rare free moments. It’s therapeutic and helps me maintain my sanity, lol.
Over the years, I’ve streamlined my gear, cutting out the unnecessary “fat.” It’s been beneficial; it’s ensured that whenever I find the time for a session, I can lay down a solid foundation for a track. Sticking primarily to the Elektron boxes and just one other synth (Minilogue XD) has significantly contributed in that regard.
It goes without saying, especially here, that truly understanding every aspect of a piece of equipment is crucial. It ensures proficiency and allows you to maximize the potential of the gear you own. Once you navigate through the quirks of the Elektron workflow and overcome its learning curve, I’ve found they offer some of the most potent electronic music-making hardware options, at least in my opinion.
Ah thanks man I’m a massive aphex twin ambient works fan
All the sounds on that track were performed live using machine drum analog four tempest and AS1
It’s my newest set up for just switching on and jamming - I know the a4 and md inside out (took me two/three years) but the tempest and as1 not as well as they’re recent additions
I make music for my sanity as well so it needs to be as close to instant gratification as possible!
I’ve got ezbot tomorrow night for two hours but I have asked him to get me started with abelton rather than continue with octatrack because I travel with my laptop for work and want to get some musical use out of it in downtime, plus four tet gets such crispy sounds from his laptop while my octatrack seems to make things sound a bit more lofi, that and me juicing the compressor
The OT was my first Elektron box. I had some good fun with it but always felt overwhelmed. I bought it and not long after got the Syntakt. It clicked with me straight away but left me thinking I should have stuck it out with the OT
Yeah I’m mulling it over at the moment
There’s a video with Barker making a track in ten minutes using an octatrack instead of a DAW
It’s amazing but also sounds like a looper rather than actual tracking if you know what I mean
Syntakt looks interesting, like a4/md synthesis in a box
If anyone has a video of someone using an octatrack that sounds like tracking I’d be very interested….and as a final flourish I’ve basically shelved my fourth octatrack or rather am using it as a stand for my apple keyboard…since getting a digitakt I can’t honestly think of a reason to use another sampler…but I won’t sell it, I did buy the dark trilogy Tshirt and don’t intend to break up the band…now, how to close a thread……???
Don’t really know what this means. If you mean something that could have been made with a tracker, or something that sounds like tracker music, this one slaps :
Ah I meant like recorder to eight track tape old school tracking a band kind of tracking! But that sounds amazing!!! Have no clue how to use a tracker but have heard great things about m8 and polyend and the software one whose name slips my mind…
renoise?
Exactly
Anyway I’ve listed my fourth and last octatrack
I must concede defeat and own that I’m not an octatrack person but prefer pure synthesis a la md a4 rytm tempest
EDIT: unlisted it because of stuff I’ve read here basically one day I’ll get to click with it and patience is a virtue etc etc plus how can I break up the mk1 OG dark trilogy???
DOUBLE EDIT: I paid Ezbot for some lessons then he rearranged then I rearranged then I think we both forgot so maybe I still have some credit there
righto peeps i am officially a madman and have ordered on interest free credit a lightly used octatrack mk2 in black with manufacturer warranty and 1 year warranty from the shop - a good deal methinks
but why? i hear you ask…
all my previous attempts at OT were mk1…hideous blue screen, shitty sounding outputs (says you not me) and annoying workarounds…
so mk2 here i come!!!
soon to be a master of the slice!!!
After a few months squinting at that tiny little ghost encrusted little OLED screen you’ll be begging for the reliable old LCD in the MK1.
This forum doesn’t help. When the OT threads die down people lose interest. Then they start going again and the gas returns. Its like the terminator. Just no stopping it.(Cue Terminator/OT meme).
Old LCD? We used to dream of having an old LCD!
