So it’s my fourth time getting an mk1 octatrack
The first three lasted a few weeks of frustration
Hope this one sticks
I just don’t sell mine. Once per year I give OT one more chance and it still doesn’t click with me.
Much easier than sell and rebuy
Yeah that’s the smarter option for sure - what do you find is the main problem?
It just doesn’t fit my workflow. Combination of DT and SP404mk2 works better for me.
That’s cool
I liked digitakt but sold it when I got rytm
Octatrack seems like a must have for experimental or just as a useful item
Some advice, just my opinion, this helped me:
Learn one thing at a time, to make it fun.
For instance, I first loaded the Demo projects only, learned how to lock scene parameters, and just had fun with the crossfader and scenes.
Very enjoyable and easy, no pressure to do more.
Then I kept just doing that, adding one simple thing. Never think beyond adding just one feature.
Accept there may be times of frustration. Accept there will be times of fun.
Keep at it for more than a few weeks! Give it a least a year or two then you’ll know if it’s for you or not.
Good luck!
Yes my a4 mk1 only really clicked after a year but even then it was also very immediate in terms of loop generation
Thanks for the advice I’ll try and hang onto this one
Experimental stuff is not about gear, it’s more about mindset when you push your gear far beyond “standard” workflows.
For me, all Elektron boxes are much deeper than I can push them at the moment.
I am in the same boat, except like others, instead of selling and rebuying, I put mine in the closet and then take it out.
I get why people get frustrated and sell their OTs (cause same here), but here’s another question, what keeps you coming back? What makes you decide you really need to give it another chance? Is there something particular about the OT that you can’t do with other devices? I ask this for selfish reasons. Every time I seriously think abut just selling mine, I see a thread like this…
Last time I put my OT back from a closet was after I saw this video and decided to try this kind of live looping/resampling/mangling.
That attempt was successful but month or two later the OT was moved back to the closet anyway.
Well I was looking at loopers and then inevitably read a thread about how OT can be a looper as well as a mixer an effect box etc etc so….but I agree that experimenting is a mindset
Just the usability and untapped sonic goodness
So, dare I say, what keeps you coming back to the OT is it’s combination of “bits and bobs.” (felt like I had to say it).
Ha! Yes exactly that
It turns out that the OT I was thinking of has a broken button, hence the low price, now I’m rethinking it and wondering if it’s just GAS…
I have the opportunity to complete the original trilogy (OT, A4 & AR) by buying a second-hand Octatrack MKI but in excellent condition for 750 euros in my city. It scares me a bit and I’m not sure if I’m going to know how to use it but I’m very tempted to try it because of the wonders I’ve heard about it. Game-changing machine and all of this… you know.
Do you think it is a good price for a machine that, although it is a few years old, is in perfect condition? Or is it worth waiting a bit and getting a MKII for a little more price??
Cheers!
Mkii doesnt offer anything that is worth the price gap in my opinion. Go for it, i believe a lot of the things that can make an octatrack overwhelming such as the nature of elektron trigs you Will already have a good graps of, so instead of overwhelming due to the thing it exclusively does plus the things that are more “elektron general workflow” double tackling you you Will probably be able to focus on the things unique to octatrack comparably easier.
In all honesty, if its in good conditions you can very easily resale it for that value so there is nothing to worry about. And if it does click, man does it Click.
Edit: btw, im not that familiar with elektron’s history but i do seem to vibe Harder with the older stuff than digitakt era. What is “AR” in this context?
Trilogy is hard to beat, I’ve had dreams about how to use it and there’s lots of threads about ideal signal paths but ultimately it’s up to you to make it work for your music
AR would be Analog Rytm
