Just pulled trigger on OG octa to complete a trilogy fetish….oh dear what have I done???
I do a similar thing. It’s sits on the desk while I use other stuff, and then every month or so I think yes, do that thing with the OT. So sometimes it’s a mixer, sometimes an fx box, sometimes a sequencer, sometimes a sample mangler. I think when I get it doing all that stuff together, in some kind of control, then I might properly ‘get’ it!
I’ll never sell my mk1 though, it’s a modern classic even if I don’t understand/use it properly yet.
Yeah that’s exactly it, a modern classic Swiss Army knife useful multi tool - now to read Merlin’s guide one more time…this time all the way to the end…anybody know what happens at the end of Merlin’s guide? No spoilers please…
His mate Arthur successfully pulled the CF card from the slot without bending any pins and so became King.
I’ve been keeping my ot for more than 10years and so many frustrations - it makes no sense at all. I can only explain it with a mix of 2 stupidities from my part:
- sunk cost fallacy: I’m very fluent with the ot and I think that since I’ve spent so much time learning this complex tool it would be unwise to throw it all away.
- Gothenburg syndrome (not Stockholm, because elektron is from Gothenburg) I’ve learned to love this hateful kidnapper of time and joy.
That’s a bad advertising slogan -
‘Buy OT is sucks your life and money and joy’
Hope it is much like all advertising…false!
In the end I decided not to buy this second hand MKI, since a little over a month ago I bought a RYTM and I think that this is not the right time to buy another Elektron machine. I prefer to have fun for a few months with my new toy.
Also, I think I can wait a bit, save some money, and buy a MKII. I think the new buttons and screen upgrade are worth it for the low price difference between a second hand MKI and a second hand MKII.
Sounds like the right decision for you for now
Enjoy the rytm it’s beast!
I’ll update about my ot mk1 once it’s here
@Bitsnbobs - where do you get stuck? If you spend an evening, you should be able to load samples into static machines and make beats.
Thanks I’ll have a crack, I’m so used to a4 and rytm synthesis so ot kinda confuses me
I saw some videos on the the A4 recently , looks to be a very “deep” analog synth engine. Got some Serious GAS that I barely shook off
And, if you get stuck on something, you can always has here!
I’m working on selling my 5th go around. Def. the last time I will own one unless a miracle happens and they fix all my issues with it. Haha. Good luck!
Current ideas for ot use are to stream stems I’ve made and mess with them live
Or
Use the a4 as a primary box and run things through the ot for live fuckery
Or
Create new set list within ot based on a4 and rytm loops
Or
Use ot as hat
A4 is a really nice instrument
Really can do almost anything except sampling
What specific issues?

-
Muting tracks mutes audio, not trigs.
-
Tracks a mono, meaning any samples with tails gets cut off without sample editing prior.
-
I wish the DT sample source screen with the waveform was available for editing start and stop times in the sequencer.
-
Issues with MIDI Plays Free tracks.
All in all, the OT is absolutely amazing, it’s just not for me. If they combined the best parts of the OT and DT, it’d be almost perfect, though. Both of them feel like they’re the part that is missing from the other, if that makes sense.
Who’s that?
Hmm that’s a bit advanced for me right now, still looking for the ‘save’ button….
