Forever 89 Visco : Teenage Engineering meets Ableton?

Please do! I am equally curious to hear how it performs for you. For the record, I’ve been running a ton of instances on my M2 and it’s a breeze this far, can’t recommend upgrading enough!

Will do! I’ll do a few stress tests and report back with my specs too.

I used Visco a lot yesterday and I really like it. A very powerful plugin, tasteful yet gratifying interface and most importantly, the actual resynthesis engine is superb.

I am yet to finish my conclusion but so far am very impressed. Bravo!

I’m in love!

This plugin could become one of my favorites. Here are some suggestions though:

  • UI scaling would be great, no fun working on a big monitor
  • Option to lock a sound so it’s not affected by the global modulation, e.g. the kick

that’s it for now.

Well, I either underestimated my laptop or overestimated how much performance impact Visco would have… It runs amazingly smooth and loaded 10x instances (which is not a very realistic situation) and it kept performing great and at max my CPU was 24%.

I noticed a little increase when playing around with the blob, but very minimal and also not something that would impact daily use.

My specs:

Added sound demo of all 10 instances playing for fun.

Edit: I will eventually upgrade to a newer laptop. Just waiting for the EU battery regulations to kick in so MacBook batteries will become easier to replace(hopefully)

I installed the demo yesterday and spent around an hour with it. Quite cool. Congratulations Forever89!
I am still undecided about grabbing it in its current state. The resynthesize function is very good and the results are very pleasant (I much prefer it to Synplant 2), if a bit “samey” in character. But that is not necessarily a negative thing: I think it is an instrument with a defined character/sound of its own and that I see as a positive thing.
I do hear a clear difference between the original samples and the resynthesized ones - mostly when importing foley and more complex one-shots. With electronic samples, to my ears the resynthesized version is very close (impressively close) to the original but still has a character of its own (I think this has to do more with the noise part of the synth engine).
One critical thing I hope will change in the future is having to import the samples one by one, which is tedious and slow. I wish I could import a large portion of my sample library all at once. Would it be possible to implement this @rikard?
Another suggestion I have concerns tuning. Tuning drums is quite essential in my opinion, and it’s often what makes the difference for me between a “cool-but-kinda-meh” and a great kit. One of the defining features of Visco is the ability to blend two sounds, but I have not found a way to edit the sounds separately. That makes it difficult to control how the tuning of the two samples is relative to each other, which is problematic for certain sounds like kicks, toms and snares. It would be beyond awesome if (on top of that) the plugin had the ability to identify the prominent frequencies of a sound (there is already some spectral processing happening, so in my imagination, it would make complete sense) and automatically transpose them, quantizing the sounds to a given scale. I don’t know of any other plugin that can do this and it would be a total game changer and a huge workflow boost for all of us that find tuning drums a must.
The modulation matrix is very cool. It would be even better with a couple of extra destinations, mainly the ability to modulate an LFO with another LFO (both in amplitude and frequency). I think you can give a lot of life to a groove by modulating parameters that way. The LFO designer is great but I miss being able to quickly create a simple and symmetrical wave (for example, a sine wave).
Parameter Locks would probably be nice. However, I do not think I miss them that much because you can simply copy a sound to various slots, modify them as desired, and achieve a similar effect sequencing them together that way.
All in all, it is a very promising and exciting plugin, I will probably take the plunge soon.

Very happy to hear!

Very happy to hear that you like it!

Scaling is in the backlog and locking sounds would be a nice touch!

Thanks for the detailed input @Oitnu!

  1. Multi-import is in the backlog, not sure when we can deliver it though
  2. Multi-sound edit is a more complex, yet desirable, topic. We’re still doing investigations on how that could work and fit the UX, but need some more time to figure it out
  3. LFO mod is on my wishlist too!

Thanks again for the input, appreciate it!

Thanks for the answer!
By the way, I mistakenly thought that you could copy a sound as it is and paste it into another slot. This is not the case (I just tried): you can only copy the state of the blob, not the rest of the sound (including the two selected “samples”). I would consider the ability to copy entire sounds between tracks to be essential.
I also appreciate the generous demo and its clever limitations. The (only?) limitation is annoying enough so that you’d have to buy the plugin if you wanted to do any serious work with it, but not so annoying that it gets in the way of testing it. Very clever, I wish other developers would take note!

That’s great news! And that loop is amazing!

Good catch, I will add this to the backlog!

And thanks for noticing, we feel the same way. It’s philosophically also the same reason why we do as little as possible with tracking users, asking for anything else but the bare minimum about who you are, and only do opt-in on promotions.

“Forever on the brink of collapse” sounds like fun…
Anyways, this looks pretty interesting. I used to play around a lot with morphing sounds, audio or via midi/parameter automation, so, definitely excited to give it a try.

All Visco presets! Nothing else added. Nice to hear how well balanced the presets are too. Saves a lot of time.

What a first, strong release!

Was wondering if Visco will be ported to iPadOS/AuV3 plugin format. The Blob sure looks like a tactile experience to me!

Anyhoo.
Will try to run Visco on an M1Pro I have around the house.

I’d dare to say that I’m not the only one thinking about how Visco could have made a killer M4L device and/or Pocket Operator-EP Series hardware machine!

Anyways. Kudos. Can’t wait to see the Blob feed itself and grow!

I definitely wouldn’t complain about an “advanced” panel with more options. Being able to get more under-the-hood seems like a lot of fun given the results I’ve been getting from loading my own samples in.

Thank you! I feel quite humbled by this whole experience. It is scary to put yourself out there like this, but the reaction from the community and press has been nothing but heartwarming and supportive

We’ve considered iOS, and multi-touch with the blob sounds really enticing, but the focus for the foreseeable future is to evolve and support the plugin so that it really shines!
