I met Dose One once, really nice guy, but man that drawling baa-baa sheep style still grates on the ears. Remember a lot of the young middle-class, emo MCs round my town doing their own terrible version of it and it all gets a bit navel-gazey and self-indulgent. Generational thing I guess. Now the kids have mumble rap or whatever. Anticon was the hotness when I were a lad then promptly forgotten after a few years. I used to mope about listening to Deep Puddle Dynamics on repeat but couldn’t have told you the name of the group for the life of me until I just looked it up on wiki and it all came flooding baaaaaack.

love doseone, but I like lamb too so

I don’t believe anyone has mentioned Milo aka R.A.P. Ferreira aka Crow Biliken. which is surprising considering his intersection with beloved producers. The album “a toothpaste suburb” has production from shlohmo and iglooghost. The album “who told you to think???” is possibly perfect and is produced by Kenny Segal https://afrolab9000.bandcamp.com/album/who-told-you-to-think and of course mastered by Daddy Kev, the ultimate stamp of freshness. Similarly “purple moonlight pages” is produced by the Jefferson Park Boys - Kenny Segal, Mike Parvizi, and Mr. Carmack (???!!!). He also has an excellent avant-garde rap group called Ruby Yacht. Amazing stuff. If you like this stuff the adjacent artists are also incredible - Armand Hammer, Billy Woods, SB the Moor, Rhys Langston, ELUCID, Busdriver, etc.

J.Z. Smith, you can take your pick

billy woods is easily my favorite contemporary rapper. His albums with kenny segal on production (“hiding places”, “maps”) in particular are some of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard. Hiding places is downright apocalyptic. I’m not sure I’ve found another artist that captures that dystopian feeling of 2020s America better than he does
