Facebook even worse?

FB is beyond the pale. I manage a charity page and must have around 30 requests for review in already this year.

FB block my charity’s posts. Most common reasons are anything related to sexual health, food or clothing banks or any kind of payment for unpaid carers or anyone else.

We also get blocked for sharing posts even though our remit is to promote community supports and raise awareness. I’ve told FB numerous times that they are by default not helping communities.

Meanwhile my personal feed is full of Hawk Tauh girl which is fine but the disconnect between that and charity page is glarng.

Meanwhile I have repeatedly reported literal n*zi posts, appallingly racist cartoons, and an anti- Black Lives Matter joke/meme with the image of a blood-spattered pickup truck and the text ‘just drove through Portland, didn’t see any protestors’ – and every single rule-breaking post I report I get the same response 7 days later: that there is nothing going against their Community Standards so they will not remove the posts.

All this just occasionally mixed amongst the few posts from people/groups I care about and 85% garbage I have no interest in. Shame it’s the main gig-notification site, messaging and music gear sales platforms, or I’d probably never look back.

This is a really interest Podcast on the state of the internet right now, plus a good look into the practices of companies such as FaceBook.

Recommend reading Stolen Focus by Johann Hari.

Life is good without Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter etc.

Lots from Jaron Lanier and Tristan Harris on this. For free.

I quit that dumpster site

I find social media unbearable these days, and am off it completely. It really does bring the idiot out of everyone who uses it. I’m not a misanthropist, I want to see people at their best, not their worst, which means knowing them in person instead of online.

I’ve been enjoying Substack lately, as a source of interesting non-hot-takes (designed more for essays and thoughtful replies); even started my own Substack; but as its Notes feature (closer to Twitter in design) takes off, it’s rapidly becoming both more addictive and lower in quality. I feel like I found a bit of ‘good Internet’ just as it started to enshittify. We’ll see.

I think FB wants you making them money, not the other way around… cannibalism capitalism, when the snake eats its own tail, for profit of course!

Users’ eye-time is its money maker.

I don’t remember when I have seen a friend post in my feed for the last time. I mean it might be now every 6 month or a year I see one of those thing.

The only thing I still see as « useful » is knowing the anniversary of someone I know.
Saying happy birthday… and that’s it… Frightening…
I don’t feel the need to remove my account, because that won’t increase/decrease the number of account used on this ghostship platform.

facebook absolutely killed the idea of telling someone “happy birthday” for me. i simply see it as a dead comment that means nothing now, especially when it would be a ton of people who i wasnt actually friends with dropping their yearly required post.

My mother-in-law @-ing me on everything when I ask her to just paste it into gchat if she wants me to respond.

I know the public performativity of social media interactions is well-trod by this point but I just want to hear from friends (at least those who haven’t been hacked and replaced with a big-tiddy AI generatively shitting out Reels yet) and very very rarely share something of my own.

I do not want forced “engagement” because someone wants to have a rich Facebook life to show how much their kids really love them.

I quit it 2009. The best decision in my life probably.

Note: I used it as “djchemie” last year for a few months to have access to a group. Then quit that one too once I was done.

True, it’s all “sponsored” and “suggested” crap. This used to annoy me, but then I figured that because of it I spend way less time on it than I used to when it was showing me content of people and groups I followed. Which is good

Agreed! That’s why I’ve hidden my birthday a few years ago and saved birthdays of people I really care about to my contacts.

I still find FB useful for discovering events and concerts and getting updates about them. I would miss a lot without it, even if some of it gets lost among all the noise.

Yes!

I’d say life is too short for FB, X, Instagram, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, linkedin etc.
Forums like elektronauts and other interesting hobby forums “steal” already enough life time.

When I want social contacts, I meet them. So am I too vintage and analog?

Another wonderful experience of Meta: it just removed a story with a funny ducky named bottle of vodka I spotted in a store, with the reason “it might be prohibited (to sell, exchange)”. I am practicing mindfullness right now to not to swear in all the languages I know. Just regular store content…

I would avoid any new technology they develop, totalitarian dystopian intrusive bullshit. Sell back the Instagram, 10 years ago it was cosy and nice square-shaped place to share photos with friends, not this hectic hysterical flood of ads and viral videos

Bluesky experience: adult content by default is disabled in settings. Easily changed, but until you search for it, you’ll never know and such flagged accounts are totally invisible even by direct link…

Sigh, while Musk’s version of Twitter is full-on shitshow, this still smells like good old Dorsey-style silent shadowban practices. Mmm, okay.

Maybe I’m misinterpreting what you’re saying here but is it really a controversial position that most people don’t want to see porn by default?

One has Nazis and Facebook gets jealous playing catch-up, and an opt in to unrestricted adult content is really something you’re going to hammer on?

Not everyone i used to talk to on twitter or Facebook wants to immerse themselves.

You want to explain to your mother who the Goatse guy is and why he’s married?

I’d happily explain it to someone else’s mother.
