I have got to say that the gas was real with this one, and still is.
I got a BIM and a BAM on my two sends, and I rarely need anything else, so it never seemed necessary to get the H90. But the itch was there, and still is. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t be tracking this topic
A bunch of Strymons, OBNE and Chase Bliss pedals. It wasn’t that it could replicate all of them, but I honestly didn’t have more than 3 switched on at a time so the H90s combination of bread and butter effects all the way to weird and wacky along with a moveable insert FX loop for my analog dirt and fuzz pedals has kind of given me like a massive amount of versatility in a very small setup.
I did keep an El Cap and Mood though, as sometimes I like getting a loop going and just going through H90 presets until I find something that fits the vibe or has interesting performance mappings.
I already own one and at times GAS for a second!
H90 Release 1.8.5
Introducing 2 new algorithms — Aggravate & Sticky Tape
Aggravate is an octave fuzz inspired by famous classic analog octave fuzzes from the 70’s. This algorithm will satisfy all your fuzz needs with its versatile controls, rich feature set and most importantly, its chewy tone that makes playing through it addicting!
Sticky Tape is a new tape algorithm based on the same emulation technology as Head Space. It opens up a world of tape tone possibilities – all the character, grit, and modulation, without the complexity of a real tape machine.
Aggravate Features
- Screaming fuzz tone with 3 voices – Thick: off, Thick: On and Thick: MoreOn which adds a rich low end to your signal
- Octave is based on an ‘absolute value’ style octave meaning that it sounds much more organic than a pitch shifted octave up
- Envelope follower to achieve some dirty Queens-like tone. The filter can go from positive to negative envelopes and has 2 shapes, linear and exponential
- Pump controls allow you to duck your signal on rhythm via a rate or tempo knob OR you can manually pump your signal by assigning Pump to a performance switch or an external controller
- Tone and mid controls for the fuzz
- Bias control to make the fuzz more ‘spitty’, reminiscent of a dying battery on a classic fuzz pedal
Sticky Tape Features
- One-knob compressor based on the compression section of DBX companders found in many tape machines
- Two tape machines with an adjustable offset to get a wide range of doubling or slap back echo effects
- 4 different tape speeds for a variety of tone and character
- Wow and Flutter controls which can be used to create lo-fi detuning, subtle flanging, gooey chorus, or the extreme sounds of a machine that’s in desperate need of a tune-up
- Flange performance parameters to get that classic, dramatic, studio style tape flange
- Separate tunings of the algorithm for Bass and Guitar depending on the Instrument Type for best possible tone no matter the instrument
In addition, this release contains new software features and improvements:
Force Mono
- Override jack-detection and output mono even when wired for stereo
- Useful for patchbay setups or switching between mono & stereo rigs
- Preserves stereo information as long as possible through H90 effects and inserts for all routing configurations
- Found under System > I/O > Output Mode
Search by Favorites
- ‘Favorites’ is now available as a filtering option in Programs and Presets modes
- Use H90 Control to mark your Favorites, and then search by Favorites on the pedal
Other Improvements
- Fixed an issue where meter LEDs had inconsistent brightness
- Improve timing of internal MIDI bpm clock (for Looper in tempo sync)
- Fixed a benign warning in H90 Control about missing Programs
- Head Space tape noise reduced at lower settings
- Allow Vintage Delay & Tape Echo algorithms to load without warping effect
- Fixes issue with preset B when restoring from a backup
How does this sound on drums?
Sorry haven’t tried the new algos yet…
New manual for the new 1.8.5 update
Here’s my three H90’s
I got H90 one into H90 zero insert 1, and H90 two into H90 zero insert 2, and enjoy all the flexibility of moving the inserts around along with H90 zero algo’s. Now only if we can get some improvements on the inserts, it would be more super powerful!
My space station I use a kiesel zeus guitar fitted with a gk-5 roland pickup and everything on this desk goes into my Line 6 Helix FX Loops [helix is my center piece for everything], and then on other side of desk I have some chase bliss pedals and source audio nemesis / ventris as well going into helix.
My set up changes too much, so next month it may be different haha.
I’m thinking up a small mobile setup and bothered by small mixers not having stereo sends to enjoy my H9 and Space in their full beauty. Looked at the H90 manual to see if all that I/O could be used to solve it without a mixer. Sadly not for my use case where I’d like to mix 2 or 3 synth sources and send stereo to FX. But potentially Eventide could add a mixer routing mode to the H90:
2-4 stereo/mono inputs mixed to outputs 1/2
send control for each input to a series/parallel FX chain (could go nuts and have sends to 2 separate fx’s)
choice to mix the fx return with the dry mix on outputs 1/2 or send it to 3/4
What do you think?
1010music Bluebox as a mixer?
Would be amazing but judging by Eventide‘s comments on various platforms they won‘t do it to keep it simple for the average guitarist.
It is possible to use the I/O on H90 to behave like a mixer for 2 stereo signals or 3 mono signals. Depending on where we place the insert point it affects each instrument together or separately. This video explains it clearly:
Incredible. I somehow had no idea it was actually capable of this. I’ve got a few pedals I rarely use - strongly considering replacing them with this.
Awesome! That was really not clear from browsing the manual.
3 H90’s for 1 guitar??? Can we have a sound sample of that?
If I read it right that would provide only one stereo send. If going such route I ‘d want more.
Each output is stereo and there are 3 outputs:
- Stereo Output 1 – Main mix
- Stereo Output 2 – Assignable, with dedicated sub-mixer (pre or post fader)
- Stereo Output 3 – Headphone output, with dedicated sub-mixer (pre or post fader)
So I guess you have one stereo out to play with for sure. Perhaps one can work around stereo output 3 (hp) as an additional stereo out, albeit at the cost of giving it up for its original monitoring purposes.
