Lovely little machine really
Did you get a replacement on your LXR-02? I’d be curious what your thoughts are about how it compares to the Perkons while in honeymoon mode for both.
And some housey stuff…
No, I didn’t get a replacement, from talking with a few other people it seems like the encoders are kind of glitchy on most/all units (although not as bad as the initial one I had), and I couldn’t afford to get both at once.
But what I can say from briefly using the LXR-02 is that it is a lot less immediate than the perkons. There is a lot of menu diving to adjust a lot of parameters for each voice and a lot of trial and error to find the sweet spots. I really like having a knob per function on the perkons. Although there are less sound design options I don’t feel limited at all. And for raw sound I much prefer the perkons. I think one reason for this is the analog filters and drive. Although there is no resonance control they sound really nice and the drive is not over the top either. Band pass may be a little narrow though. Even though both are digital the lxr-02 would have been a lot of work itb with effects and saturation etc. to get to sound really good.
Perkons is huge though and I had to rearrange my entire desk to fit it. But worth it, I think the universe forced me to make the right choice :-).
Here’s a recent improvisation on the Perkons! Jam on, fellow Perkonites!
That is where the Rytm shines as it has great range and can sound fantastic without a lot of gain and compression and noise levels are fairly clean compared to your experiences on the Perkons. I still want to get some hands on time with a Perkons but these reviews would require me to try before buy in this case for an expensive piece of kit. I was fortunate to be able to try a friends Rytm MK2 before buying mine and loved it so it was natural for me to buy this as my main drum synth. I do like my Erica Synths modules and would lean toward the more expensive Techno modular machine.
is it bigger than the Rytm? My Oberheim OB X8 is massive sized and largest synth in my studio. That thing is gigantic!
Yeah, I noticed that pretty immediately (“wow that’s quiet!”)
Have you tried out the “Vintage BBD mode”?
Oddly enough, I need to get through the manual a bit regarding the BBD emulation since I believe it’s normaled into the FX send for each channel… but sending channels in (even with feedback full up) I didn’t seem to hear it?
The rytm didn’t interest me because I was already set as far as analog drums and samples go (although the automation of the rytm would be nice). I’m also not into pads (I like buttons like the midi fighter spectra a lot better). I did quite a bit of finger drumming at one point but step sequencing and then editing is just so much quicker for me, especially with busy or complicated drum patterns.
As far as the noise it is funny because I like my gear quiet, but then I will add like a vinyl sim in the daw or something. I guess I just like being able to control exactly how much noise there is lol.
The perkons is quite a bit bigger than the rytm. Not as big as the OB-X8 :-P.
I only tried the vintage bbd mode when I was messing around in the settings menu, but I didn’t hear a difference. I thought I would have to go back and explore more later to hear what the difference was.
Can you not hear a difference either? Or are you saying you can’t hear the delay at all? If that is the case make sure you have the main mix knob up turned up as well…
Once you get to know the LXR-02, it becomes a lot more immediate, especially with its performance features (kit morphing is incredible). It’ll never hold a candle to the Perkons when it comes to immediacy, but the sound design possibilities are so much deeper. For digital drum machine lovers, the LXR is a must have.
I think when you plug something into the send/return jacks it turns the built in delay off.
Yeah, maybe i didn’t have the master send up enough assuming it was being applied only to the main outs instead of individual application.
Some dubby stuff…
Did anyone ever figure out what was included in the firmware update?
I think it was midi bug fixes or so I heard.
Mine has had to go back too
With a memory card in it was pot-luck whether it would a) work normally, b) power-up but the sequencer wouldn’t run and triggers wouldn’t trigger, c) not power up at all.
The apparent lack of testing is worrying and I do think that when you get to the point where you have to ask users to take it apart and file parts down you need to be thinking about recalls.
I’ve asked for a refund instead of a replacement as it’s too expensive to risk it going rogue once out of guarantee.
Shame really as it’s a really interesting machine, and I can’t find anything as beautiful to fill the gap on my desk.
Wild, yeah. I haven’t observed any hardware/firmware issues with mine but I absolutely understand the necessary paranoia around anyone who’s received one in that state.
It makes me paranoid even though I dont have any of the issues lol.
I’d like to see some screenshots of this bemusing request by this wonderfully productive musical authority.
Upon reading such ideas I got adjacently hit with ideas like licking Baldric’s toes whilst listening to Spice Girls.
