Highly tempted to buy this machine! Was not interested at all at the beginning. After watching many YouTube Vids - this device seems to offer MUCH more than a 303! Would also be a fantastic addition to modular as well …
My question: Does it provide step probability / conditional trigs?
(Tried to look it up in the manual - but here I more or less stuck in the random section for all the other parameters).
I can’t recommend this synth enough. It really is a different beast than a 303, but in a very good way.
Yes, there is step probability…I can’t recall where exactly you enter this, but Richard Dehove covers it in one of his excellent tutorial videos. Perhaps it’s this one: Erica Synths DB-01: Advanced randomization - YouTube
The Random menu (it has its own button) also allows you to set average probability of steps - e.g. 40% that steps will trigger during a given sequence. The randomization function, which can be set to a specific scale with other customized parameters, is incredibly powerful.
Unfortunately there are no conditional trigs or anything approximating Elektron sequencer sophistication. But that won’t prevent you from creating awesome, evolving patterns.
Don’t hesitate to buy this thing; I think you’ll fall in love with it.
Yeah there’s probability here…and I think some rudimentary 1:2, 2:4 type stuff. So nothing as conditional as, say, NEI or 1ST on an Elektron, but I misspoke by saying it has no conditional trigs; there’s plenty to work with. I remember digging in and thinking that functionality was a little bit limiting for what I’m trying to do, but for adding variation to patterns it should offer plenty to work with. (Also I believe you can set a filter setting per step which is like a very limited form of P-locks).
The box offers a lot of depth without throwing too much at you (i.e. menu-diving, oodles of knobs, etc.).
I had the same regarding its choice for conditional trigs. If I’m correct they only do 1/2, 1/4 etc. but not 2/2 or 4/4 for example. Kind of weird that they only work first out of x times. Otherwise the randomization functions on the other hand have lots to speak for.
Yeah volume is only accessible in a sub-menu. That’s a bit limiting for performance…sure you can use the cutoff, but this filter doesn’t quite bring down the volume until the EQ is very low. One interesting workaround is to feed the signal through an FX pedal, then use that to control the volume of the synth. (In my case, I use Erika Synth’s Zen Delay, which plays really nice with the DB-01).
I have another point of critique on the DB01: the contrast between lit and semi-lit buttons is really too little. I have to look very close to see which ones are (not) lit. I even see variance in led brightness that makes some look lit while they are not. Erica should really bring down the semi lit brightness to make it more readable.
I wonder whether it’s baked in the pcb hardware or can be changed in firmware.
