For this one, what I did was listen to the playlist for any parts I wanted to use. Then I went back through and listened to the tracks I had sort of mentally highlighted, this time recording the little bits that I wanted into Audacity. From there, I saved those to my phone and messed around with them in Koala.
My Digitakt is my favorite piece of gear. There’s nothing I feel more connected with. But I don’t always like starting a beat on my Digitakt unless I know how I want to come at it. And I think Koala is great for me as a sketch pad but as a standalone thing it doesn’t really fit with the way that I like to make beats. So sometimes I’ll come up with an outline on Koala and then recreate it and flesh it out on the Digitakt.
So that’s what I did. I put the beat together as a pattern and then arranged it around the acapella that I chose.
Also, one shot sampling is great too. I think I’m going to try to build one of my alternates around that. My last beat for one of these wasn’t exactly hip-hop but it was all one shots and came out pretty cool, I think.
One thing I generally don’t do is delete projects though. Especially for something like this. I’d just work in the same one.
