Perkons because I can’ afford one.
And MD in combination with Airbase99.
I recently sold all my synths and drum machines, but wanted just one analog drum machine to tinker with.
The drum machine I decided to buy is the Acidlab Drumatix.
By far, my favorite drum machine due to how good it sounds.
Jomox Alphabase—it sounds sooooooo good. Just delicious. The machine really opened up for me once I delegated sequencing to Hapax.
Perkons—incredible sound, so easy to play and jam. For live performance, my favorite standalone drum machine.
Pulsar 23–mystery machine
The best sounding drum machine I’ve ever heard is Pulsar 23. I believe there are way more sounds in it as people use it for [for example, metallic percussion and hihats, one can get a glimpse in loopop’s vid], even though what people use it for sounds great, too.
(Landscape Noon is completely differnet and sounds amazing too.)
I did and do not own either of them, though. If they only had Midi and Total Recall and the patching be virtual
But luckily I come close to the Pulsar on my Rytm, and I’ve already started to get into Landscape Noon territory.
Apart from that I’d say Machinedrum since it has such a wide range of sounds and 16 effing tracks.
Edit: The reason I’m not mentioning Syntakt is because that iss a complete effing music production studio, but also a bit lacking in the hihat department. Rytm is more a “drum machine” and the hihats are better than on the Syntakt (because of the completely different track overdrive totally transforming their sound). Still … feels like way more than ‘just’ a drum machine I do own Syntakt and Rytm and they are my favourite synths.
Interesting…
I find it difficult to chose between the two. AR is so powerfull for techno and MD so adapted to IDM, i find nor can do the duty of the other.
So different sounding. I bought AR for techno and i had put my MD on sale because it was, for my taste not for techno (mainly the kicks).
I kept MD last moment because it’s the best Elektron for IDM. But if i should keep only one, despite my old and truly love for MD, i would let it go.
I never try AR for IDM, not sure it would be pertinent. I will give it a try one day.
Is the screen and edition with it not too hard ? Easy or complicate to mastered ?
I’m found of it’s rythmic capabilities
i did not buy it.
I thought you had one… so appealing
No I never said i was going to buy it
I was looking at Jomox again a few days ago as reminded when spotting Mike Parker uses the Xbase09. Do you have a solid example video/audio of the Alphabase you could recommend?
Here are some demos for anyone interested:
Here’s a great video of the AB in action:
And here’s a recent jam I cooked up with AB on drum duties:
Thanks all for these examples. Super helpful, much appreciated.
I don’t really see it like that, one of the things I love about the MD is that it’s not married to any particular genre, I’ve made garage, dub, techno and all kinds of other stuff using the MD it’s like a regular synth to me where it can be carved and molded into almost any kind of genre though it does take a little work not nearly as much as it takes to bend the AR into doing a variety of sounds.
I did really enjoy the AR I had it for about 10 years but I did end up parting with it to put the money towards modular drums, so now I have the OT and SP404mk2 for samples and the MDUW and Erica synths LXR2 eurorack module for drum synthesis and I’m much happier with that combo that the AR-MDUW-OT combo
Alpha Base for the sound quality
Isla S2400 for the sampling, sound quality and ease of use.
Perkons for ease of use, sound quality, i/o and sequencer.
Elektron Digitakt for ease of use, sampling, Elektron sequencer, midi and sound quality.
These were my first Machinedrum (non UW) tries,
pretty Techno I’d say, especially the second one
Machinedrum UW for its sound, power, sampling/resampling, and overall versatility
Tanzbär for its raw analog sound
If you want some beefy G1 kicks (and to save CPU), try a sine LFO as an oscillator - it goes plenty into audio range for kicks, and you get free crunch from the 24kHz control sampling rate. Also try setting the phase to a peak or valley instead of a zero crossing and retrigger it for a free transient.
Cool trick, @license !!!
Nord Modular G1
Sine LFO used as an oscillator, modulated by a simple AD envelope (amp and pitch). Playing with the LFO phase looking for diff amount of attack click. No filters or FX used. Just G1 raw sound.
