How interesting. May explain how I was able to buy a NYX v2 for very little cash at all yesterday. Folk with upgraditis clearing the deck for whatever the new thing is…
I like the addition of Noise on this reissue and I wish mine had that, but I will take the original reverb.
The reverb is different?
I was wondering the same and asked them. They replied:
It is based on the Splash algorithm but it has been improved.
More specifically, it can get brighter on higher Time values and also we have extended the decay times for more lush reverb.
Well the NYX v2 arrived today and what a lovely surprise. It’s basically a metric tonne of modulation with a couple of oscillators attached. Lots of fun to explore. Not particularly spectacular with the keystep plugged in. But as a standalone drone box (which I think is basically its purpose), I’m enjoying it a lot.
Dear lord! That reverb is nearly endless as it is.
I’d be interested to compare the two (v1 vs reissue), and if they made it a bit brighter that’s not necessarily a bad thing at all…
I always wanted a NYX but never got around to buying one, then version 2 came out but it just didn’t sound as good as version 1, the reverb I guess.
So I’m on dreadbox website blowing hot n cold as to weather I should purchase or not as I have several of their previous DIY 42HP offering.
I’m looking at the spec and thinking maybe I’m now just better off getting the stylophone CPM DS-2 due in November???
Well after 24hrs with the v2, the reverb is definitely the weak point, in that if you’re not careful it ends up either on to the extent everything is just mush, suppressing sound to the point nothing can be heard, or barely registrable. Although some of that might be the result of the learning curve in it being a bit steep - there have been moments when suddenly it adds to the sound in unexpected and beautiful ways. Repeating that magic tho…
But when you take the package together, it barely matters, there’s so much other good stuff going on. I wonder why they didnt tweak the reverb a bit with their firmware update, mind. Perhaps it just wasn’t possible. A bit of a shame as a degree more user friendliness would help. Overall, though, such a nice little synth, perfect for a bit of standalone fun and am sure will find a place in the more regularly used pile of toys.
They call it the MKIII
Finished building the Nyx reissue yesterday. Build was quite okay took about one hour. Was struggling a bit putting the knobs on to find the correct position regards to the Nyx routing but now it works.
Lovely sound
Here is a jam with Strega and Nyx. Strega is routed to Nyx In1 and then goes to Ep-133 into focusrite interface to record video on iPhone.
Nyx and Ep-133 use same Trs Midi spec so it worked with just a Trs stereo cable between them. Then Nyx has Midi to CV onboard so im running the Cv outs to Strega:
I got a hold of one recently, and was interested in trying it out as I love the OG.
Build took me about 40 minutes, though I am sure folks could do it much faster. I just faffed about a fair bit.
Just ordered mine! I’m super pumped!!!
Ok, this is a long one, incl build. He is really testing it out in the second half. Lots of modulation in there.
Does anyone who bought the reissue know, if you set the midi channel and turn off the machine…does it remember the midi channel when you turn it back on?
I don’t have the Nyx reissue, but I have the Hades reissue and if you set midi channel with Omni mode it will remember the channel it’s set to.
I would imagine this Nyx behaves similarly
I have a v1, obviously different because the incoming midi channel is set via jumpers inside of the synth, but just to confirm that there too, it will remember it (evidently since it‘s a physical jumper setting :)).
Same goes for the Nymphes, on which the midi channel is set via the controls on the device.
Yeah this is the way my Hades works as well I can’t imagine the Nyx would be any different.
One thing about that Omni switch though… if you hit it accidentally while playing it can be confusing to figure out why in the fuck your Hades/Nyx is playing when you’re supposed to be on a different channel. That got me real good once. I had to walk away and come back when the haze of marijuana had subsided substantially.
When I figured it out I sure had a good chuckle…
Can anyone who has a reissue report back on the LFO/envelope speed? If remember well on the original V1 was sort of not slow enough
I haven’t built mine but this is from the manual:
2.6 Modulators
The Nyx three modulators have identical controls and range times:
Rise: 1ms to 5sec
Fall:10ms to 15sec
