What a great marketing. Make a limited run of a Synth for Collectors or resellers.
Edit : I think my post needs some clarification.
I’m really happy for those who could get one. I was thinking hard on how I could get it. This is a really nice Synth. But I’m afraid that resellers could get some units at the expense of other good souls.
A limited run of a fantastic Synth is a Collector’s item. The way the Collector uses the Synth belongs to him. Don’t tell me that resellers didn’t jump on this.
For my part, I would have bought this Synth but I needed a little more time to think about how I could acquire it. Too bad it’s sold out.
I never talked about anyone here. I think Dreadbox did a smart move with this one, that’s all.
I ordered one and will love playing with it. I justified throwing it on my credit card because I knew it was limited.
I’m glad that it’s limited and that aspect makes it more special to me. I like all types of limited things though. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
I also don’t really get why this had to be limited. I‘d say there’s a place for a flagship poly from Dreadbox sold for around 2.000€. The other Murmuxes seemed to have far less mass appeal, so I get that they were limited. But this? Maybe they just don’t have the capacity to build something in a completely different form factor than their smaller offerings at scale?
@Tchu: You might wanna watch out for B-Stock listings of the big retailers, I bet some people will send them back. I can also see some of them popping up on Elektronauts or other places without a premium.
Edit: listened to the demo posted by @Bignill. I guess it shows that it’s not all magic coming out of it. Imo the patch only got listenable at around 7 minutes in. Beginning was also nice. I didn’t like all the non bell tones, but the harmonics were also not tamed with the filter.
Considering the sort of stuff people will pay 2k+ for, I’d say this thing is a great deal for a 300 unit limited edition (or even just for a polysynth of that quality).
Timing was bad for me, don’t want to spend that sort of money atm, otherwise I would have jumped on this.
There’s no issue per se, I‘m fine with a small factory making something special with passion for a few people. But Dreadbox also offer other beloved synths that you can just buy, only lacking a hands on poly so far. That’s all I was saying: it sucks for the people who would save for that synth because they love Dreadbox and would love that poly, but that ship has sailed now. Like some people on this thread. Not criticizing Dreadbox.
@Bignill: great, looking forward to your first examples and impressions!
God this thing sounds so amazing! There is really only one video on YouTube that showcases it properly imo (the one Prints links above).
Just this into a gorgeous reverb and I know my creativity would be on fire. I love synths that are simple and immediate and sound big and beautiful, and this is exactly that. 8 voices of it! Love the look too.
God I hope they sell out soon in the UK or I may accidentally have to buy one!
Actually I think their pricing strategy is a bit barmy.
Why launch it at 2,699€, excl VAT, and then days later drop the price to 2,180.00€? UK retailers are still selling at the higher price. Andertons said they wouldn’t sell at the lower price.
I believe Dreadbox by accident put the price INCL VAT, and then corrected to show it without VAT.
Greece VAT is 24% and 2180 x 24% = 2703,2, close enough to 2699 that feels cheaper then +2700
Anderton sells INCL VAT and £2759 = 3,213€ realistic now that UK isnt part of EU any more.
Thomann had the exact same prize as Dreadbox “lower” prize from the start, what a saw.
Not really realistic when Thomann, Bax & Music Store selling it at the cheaper price including VAT & import duty. (But from experience I wouldn’t trust Bax when ordering a limited edition item).
Thomann sold out now, but Music Store just told me they have 2 left of their allocation of 7 arriving in June.
So now they have 1 left after my credit card took the hit…
It was supposed to arrive by Monday via FedEx, but when I check the tracking, it shows that the package is being held due to issues with the paperwork. I’m trying to get Dreadbox to reach out to FedEx and resolve the situation.
I’m actually trying really hard to pay off some significant credit card debt. This “limited” beauty came along and aroused me like no synth has before so I knew I had to have it. I immediately threw it on my credit card and will have to eat the interest while prolonging my debt.
