Is there something in Digitone original that can’t be done in version 2?
I tried to make in version 2 some sounds from the original and I feel it doesn’t sound exactly the same, making me feel the original has more bite and character…
Maybe I am wrong, so share some light please on this topic.
So far, it sounds like on the DN2 multi-mapping is not possible, overbridge is not currently supported (but planned), and there is some argument about whether there is less control over operators due to not having the additional page.
Other than that it can’t have a yellow screen which sucks but it can be a full on groovebox and more easily become a drum machine, which is awesome.
I assume there are differences in the sound design aspect due to machines, but I bet if you spent long enough working on a patch, it would be difficult to make sounds with the DN1 that you can’t make with DN2.
One curiosity that I’ve found loading DN1 projects on DN2 is that the default sound is a bit louder on tracks 1-4 (original DN1 tracks) than on tracks 9-16 (DN2 new tracks).
I inspected all the parameters and couldn’t find a diference in values that could make this volume difference. Did anyone noticed it?
Track Layering is there, but because of its new location several menus in - it’s difficult to use it as a performance feature, but now is more of a compositional feature. On the DN1 it was located in the Voices menu - accessed by a single button press. You could also turn the encoder to select between various tracks to layer - frequently yielding happy accidents.
This is a huge deal for me since is use the Voice allocation page as my main performance feature on the DN1.
It’s theoretically possible but I don’t think Elektron will be willing to do the swap, which means that the operation will probably void your warranty so it might be advisable to wait until the coverage expires.
You could email elektron and ask them, and they might even sell you the screen, but I think the answer as to if they’ll do the work if you pay for it is likely to be no. While the technology is compatible, I’ve seen some indication that if you don’t get the correct part, there can be issues of axis inversion or possibly other strange behavior so if you decide to go through with it and have someone do the swap, make sure you get the compatible OLED part number.
There’s a thread where people discuss screen swaps for other Elektron devices, I’ll see if I can find it.
add:
There may be another thread with more details but @Airyck discusses some of the details for yellow to white in the thread here, so basically the reverse of what you want:
also here’s a thread with the screen inversion issue after the swap:
I asked them last year if it’s possible to buy a Syntakt with a yellow screen, the answer was no. If it’s produced with a white screen, it can only be replaced with the same one.
The only solution is to get a yellow screen and replace it when the warranty expires.
