Hi.
I’m planning to get a Digitakt 2 in a setup with 2 synths (Roland S-1 Tweak and Roland SE-2).
At first I wanted to use a Novation Circuit Tracks to be the center of the setup, sequencing the two synths, and as a mixer with the 2 audio inputs.
Very clever layout from Novation, but the Tracks is a bit limited to go further than a sketchpad (sound engine has a “sheen” to it I don’t really like, effects are bit limited, sequencer layout I’m not very fond of… etc)
As a consequence, I have decided to step up and get the DT2 .
I plan to use it, if possible, to sequence the two synths, and to stream their audio out in the audio in of the Digitakt. Exactly like the Circuit Tracks.
So my questions :
If I sequence the Roland Tweak S1 and SE-02 with the Digitakt 2, and feed their audio outs back into the Digitakt 2, will there be some kind of latency (audio or midi)
In this situation, can I benefit of the Digitakt’s internal effects on the audio ins?
And lastly :
What is the Digitakt’s midi type A or B type ?
I have discovered that there are midi types (wasn’t aware of this at all) . For example Arturia seems to be Type B, whereas the Roland S-1 is type A…
The midi plugs are wired according according to each nomenclature.
Neither - it has no type - it’s only a type when the cable plug is changed to a jack … it’s because some manufacturers utilise different parts of the plug to route the standard connections
The Model series use TRS jack MIDI (only Elektrons to do so) and are notionally type A (the norm) but they can be reconfigured internally to act like type B
I have done exactly this with my OG Digitakt (and actually also own both the S-1 and SE-02). I haven’t experienced any latency and can use the Digitakt’s reverb and delay on those external synths.
Awesome, thanks !
So let’s say, on the Digitakt, I use the left audio in to plug the S1, and the right audio in to plug the SE-02, will they take two tracks?
Where does the audio in go in the signal chain? After the tracks, and before the master output ?
My goal is not to sample the synths, just streaming in mixing desk style…
Not sure if I’m very clear…
I haven’t purchased the SE-02 yet… just have the S-1 (awesome synth).
Do they complement each other well?
The S-1 is kind of bassy to my ears, it has a very powerful low frequency to my ears. Not too much overlap with the Moogy SE-02?
Here’s a block diagram from the Digitakt II manual. You can see that the audio ins are routed to the mixer. You can apply the fx as sends to the audio inputs and those channels also go to the compressor. Audio ins don’t have the additional features of the sample tracks like the filters or sample rate reduction.
The S-1 is very solid, great sounding, and quite versatile for a simple synth. However the SE-02 immediately sounds analog in a different way and has a ceertain punchy bass character that is lovely. The S-1 (being a version of the SH-101) also has great punchy bass, but it just hits differently on the SE-02.
A couple things I don’t like about the SE-02 include the fact that the resonance (labelled “Emphasis” on the SE-02) doesn’t seem to do much for the first 2/3 of the knob, other than remove bass. Strange quirk. I also find the knobs a bit too loose for my liking, and since they are so small and close together it can be difficult to adjust certain parameters, especially the tuning of the oscillators.
If you go through the patches of the SE-02 you’ll hear a really wide variety of awesome monosynth sounds. This synth is fairly unique in my studio. I used to have a Moog Slim Phatty and the SE-02 could nail most of the sounds almost perfectly, so I sold the Moog!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to post the diagram. Things can’t be more clear now.
The S1 is gorgeous sounding, but I don’t quite hear that unique analog character brings.
But it’s great nonetheless. It does so much in such a tiny package, it’s mindblowing. I ordered bigger knobs at Thonks right away, because I know I’m going to keep that piece of kit.
I do think the Roland JU-06A sounds closer to the real thing.
I definately want to add a proper analog voice in my rig.
I’m still on the fence between the Toraiz AS-1, Roland SE-02, Dreadbox Typhoon, Uno Synth Pro X… I really want patch memory for sure.
