Hey @KennyJapan !
The consensus is that they both sound the same.
The AK has its joystick and a few buttons around that makes it easier to use it as a MIDI controller… But I would say that if you had to choose between e.g. XKey37 +A4 and AK, you should consider this :
The best benefit of AK is the separate stereo outs.
A4 has the best form factor.
IMO these are really the arguments that you should consider to make your choice.
Oh, and AK has a better resale value, for what it’s worth.
My personal opinion : I love the possibility to bring my A4 anywhere to jam.
Now I’ll close the thread and strongly suggest you use the Search function on this board, it’s very efficient !

I just switched from A4 to AK and found that the AK sounds more raw and in your face than my (ex) A4
I also found the sound louder, so I attached an oscilloscope and found that the AK got way hotter oscillators than the A4
A single oscillator, no sub, no modulations of any kind passing thru non-resonant filters (filter 2 in LP2 mode) starts to saturate at oscillator level 60 or so
It´s not clipping but kind of soft saturation
Also the filter overdrive sounds VERY different
So I guess that m…
I haven’t heard any discussion on this, but I’m assuming it’s because not many people have the AK yet. Does the same bass patch sound slightly better on the AK than the A4?
Hi guys, so my very kind retailer has said I can bring back my newish A4 and swap it for an AK just paying the normal price difference. I originally ordered the AK then changed to A4 when I heard about Overbridge and because I thought I could just use Ableton Push as the ‘keys’ for the A4. But it feels like something is missing and I’m not finding the A4 very accessible. Anyway, before I confirm that I want to change it, who else swapped an A4 for an AK? Why? Was it worth it?
Thanks guys!
apart from the AK’s hardware advantages …
i seem to like the A4 sound better.
maybe my ears trick me, but somehow it seems to sound more “funky”
in all the youtube videos, while the AK seems to sound more HiFi = cleaner
i know the “deep bass” discussion and this comparison:
but even here the A4 to me sounds more raw and funky
am i wrong?
or is this really a general difference?
Friends,
I scanned the forums for this first, but failed to find what I was looking for. Like God tested his own people by a 40 year long desert walk, Eektronauts are being tested by its search engine.
I’m considering throwing out all my oscillators with the water and replace them with just an A4, or an AKeys, except for the Minitaur (which has some relevance to my question that’s about to follow).
I’ve read somewhere that the AKeys is more geared towards bass than the A4.
Does that imply so…
